Default Can grinds be cause by play in the shifter?

Hey, Ive got a 97 Hatch with a B16a, and for a while Ive noticed a grind going into third and fifth gear when trying to shift fast or at high rpm.

But the thing is, it doesnt sound/feel like its the gears grinding, it is more of a resistance and a kerplunk kinda sound coming from the shifter. (Ive grinded the gears accidentally before and it sounded like a solid grind from the transmission)

My question is, could it be caused by play in the shift linkage? and can Energy Suspension Shifter Bushings possibly fix my problem?

Thanks in advance for the help.

usually teh universal joint oor worn bushings cause shift lever play and usually that is a separate issue than what sounds like synchro issues.

Yeah, I dont think its the syncros. When I have time I will probly buy the ES Shifter Bushings, my shifter has some slop when in gear. So hopefully they might tighten it up and make shifter smoother.

I would say that after going 300k miles on stock bushings and a worn out u joint on my car then replacing the bushings, later rebuilding the u joint and then opening the transmission the synchros were worn. bushings and rebuilt u joint MIGHT help, but they do not fix the wear, damage and so on that occur on the brass synchros.

What type of shop can rebuild the u-joint?
I just figure it would be alot cheaper than having the syncros replaced.

It only happens from 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th. Do worn syncros feel the same as when grinding gears/mis-shifting? Because my car shifts like butter any other time, it just feels like the shift linkage is fighting the shifter when trying to shift quick.

The problem is going to be the synchro, the synchro spring, the dog teeth, or more likely a combination of them all. I've only heard good things about Synchrotech, I would see how much they would rebuild it.

I concur with everyone else, this sounds like an internal problem like the synchros.

Shifter bushings is not going to affect that.

My old transmission didn't have any problems shifting at any RPM or any speed I slammed her into gear.

My new transmission has a challenge fast shifting or high rpm shifting into 3rd gear only.

The linkage wasn't changed at all between the two. The linkage is pretty worn and sloppy and I still was able to beat the hell out of my old transmission without ever a issue except the rare occasion I straight missed the gear from trying to shift so fast and hard.

Even if you have bad linkage bushings it's still going to try to shift in the same manner when the synchros engage. Only if the internals are bad will it grind.

Bushings can cause an issue, but it will almost never be isolated to only two gears. Time to have the transmission rebuilt.
