Default 2000 Accord 4 cyl auto - whinning noise

2000 Accord 4 cyl with 150K miles on it. It makes a whining noise starting at about 30 mph and gets louder with speed. While at 40 mph or so I placed the tranny into neutral and the noise was still there. There is no noticeable vibration at any speed. I checked the axles while the car was on jackstands and there is play at the CV joints.
Question: Could this noise be due to worn axles? wheel bearings or tires? The tires look ok, but I don't know how old they may be.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Raulg

It could be a wheel bearing but it is common for the Automatic Accord transmission to have a differential bearing failure.
