Icon2 1994 Accord no o/D lockup?

Hi all I'm new to the board and also new to Hondas, and just recently bought a 1994 Accord LX from my sister thinking it'd get much better mpgs than my S.H.O. Well it turns out that the 4th gear lockup isn't functioning properly and I'm getting only 23-24 mpgs along with it humming along at nearly 3400rpms on the freeway at about 70 mph. The transmission gave a code 1 to which I replaced the lockup solenoid but still have a blinking D4 light and no lockup. Everyone that I've taken it to wants to replace the tranny itself when it shifts fine just no lockup. Now it did once or twice lockup but when the car was ice cold, and as soon as it got to operating temp no dice. Things replaced: ECM, main relay, coolant temp sensor, and it's been dealer maintained most of its life with records of tranny fluid changes thru out its life. Any clues? Next order is replacing the Tcm?? I'm clueless here as this is my first Honda.

The transmission and/or torque converter is probably bad. It's pretty rare to have an electrical problems with the trans. It especially looks that way if it sometimes works cold.

Really? Then why is the d4 light even giving me a code? That seems odd to me that the whole tranny would need replacement but I guess you guys know these cars better than me. Shortest lived Honda owner in history. Thanks man

Because it's not locking up. Usually a Honda trans will throw a code that is a symptom of a bad transmission, not the cause of. You might get really lucky and have a bad TCM or a wiring issue, but 9 times out of 10 it's the trans that's the problem. That said these particular transmissions were not noted for failure.

Well after replacing the Tcm I'm not sure what I'm gna do. I really hope this fixes it and it doesn't need a whole replacement. Gna get the Tcm tomorrow and report back what I get. Btw can I use any Tcm from any Same year Accord or are they specific?

Well after replacing what the TCM deemed as a bad part the transmission is doing just fine. Lockup is engaging and fuel economy has returned. It's best to diagnose and replace parts accordingly instead of taking even a "Honda specialist's" word for it....
