Re: Valve Adjustment Question (SIRBUSH)
It sounds like it. I have 42000 miles on my car and it is making a clicking noise. I have heard they need to be adjusted around this mileage. I didnt hear it or know what it sounded like but I opened my hood tonight and it is a very obvious sound. If anyone knows pricing for getting them adjusted, let me know as I need to have this done.

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (b00stn)
It sounds like a rhythmic ticking sound, and I wouldn't pay anyone to do it. It really is childs play. Get a helms and do it yourself. The tools and book will pay for themselves the first time you do it yourself and you'll learn allot about your engine and how it works. I use a smallish flat tip screwdriver, 10mm deep socket, ratchet, and feeler gauge. No fancy tools required, but they do make it go a bit faster.

how tight should it be on the feeler guage? should it be pretty tight, just touching, or somewhere in between? I guess if you adjust it in the middle of spec then you can't be to far off, but I want to know what is correct.

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (jweller)
when the feeler just starts to catch thats the value to use. and middle of the road is always a safe assumption
i have found that even after doing a valve adjustment there still will be noise but I have learned its the injectors. You can always readjust to the low side if you still think there is noise from the valvetrain and not the injectors.

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (moyerek)
Honda makes fairly noisy distributors as well. Mine makes allot of racket. The valves make a very distinct ticking sound when they need attention.

...kind of....
that's from the link posted above. they make the wrench but i guess you have to bend it. someone above mentioned a 10mm deep socket. how would this work? dont you need the top open for the screwdriver?
thanks

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (Nameless)
I have the Helms manual, and I can the tool from a friend.
Otherwise it is $95.00 through a shop or $165.00 through the dealer.
I want to do it myself, but I wouldn't be replace the gaskets/seals and they would.

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (95GS-R)
you can just use any 10mm open end wrench or a crescent wrench you don't need to but the special one.
The only time you really need to put any torque on the nut is to loosen it to start adjusting the screw. once it's set right ya you have to hold the screw in the same place and tighten down the locknut. however if you just visually take note of where the screw is facing you can tighten the nut with a socket (if the normal open ender or crescent doesn't work) and just make sure that the screw is in the right place and the clearances are still correct.
It may take a little longer but not that bad.

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (95GS-R)
if you rev past 8,5k alot you'll need to adjust sooner and more often. I'm diong valve adjustments once every month. The first time you do it, it will seem tedious and somewhat complicated. After you get the hang of it tell your friends and charge em 50 bucks each..lol. But seriously when you crack the valve cover be sure to inspect the gasket for any damage. I change mine every 3 months, or every 3rd job. You don't want to have a leaky valve cover gasket..

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (advanracing62)
I think he means 8.5k, and yes the higher and more frequently you rev the more oft you should check your valve lash. I can't imagine needing to replace your valve cover every 3 months, I've never replaced one revving to 9.3k. Perhaps he means valve cover gasket?

Re: Valve Adjustment Question (B18EG6)
yeah, I think he meant the gasket.................
BTW, you'll never get the screw to stay in the right place if you tighten the nut with a deep socket ratchet......it would take you forever to guess how much the screw will turn and when the nut is tight enough and still have the right clearance.
If you do your valves, make a wrench like the one in the pic above or buy an adjustment tool. Also, always check the clearance after you tighten the nut .........the screw may not have looked or felt like it moved, but it does sometimes.
