the TRUTH about the h23a DOHC VTEC
while searching for an h23a to buy, i noticed a ton of confusion about this engine. many people call the non-vtec h23a1 from a prelude, by the dohc vtecs code of h23a. here are some specs. Engine code H23A
CC/Type 2258cc
Horsepower 197bhp@6800rpm
Torque 163ft lbs@5300rpm
Compression 10.6.1
Bore 87mm
Stroke 95mm
OBD 2
Redline- 7200rpms
this engine only came in accord wagons(not usdm)
it also was only paired with a 4spd auto tranny...many people believe they are being fooled when they see a 5spd h23a for sale. this is because some dealers bolt the h22 tranny to it. it can be used with a p13 ecu as well, but will need to be converted to obd1 if you wish to run it with the obd1 ecu. i believe vtec kicks in at 4900, but will obviously be higher using the p13 ecu. contrary to popular belief, you can find this engine most places for the same price as an h22a. although the redline is slightly lower than an h22a, the torque curve is much different giving it more mid-range power than the h22a. ive seen a dyno of a h23a with only i/h/e make 192 whp and 164tq(no the header was not an expensive one...i believe it was greddy.) for the same price as an h22a, if you already have a 5-speed tranny or can find one paired with the h23a, i say h23a is the much better choice.
