Both in the same cylinder. Looks like the guy I bought it from ran it no problem, as there was exhaust gases in the pits, and there is no damage to the valves.

I know these can create hot spots. So I'm wondering if I can sand them out, filled some way, or would I need them welded? I was told it would be expensive to weld them, he mentioned the head would have to be heated up before it could be repaired by welding.

Any info will be appreciated.

If the valves seal, leave it

To fix that the right way the guy you talked to is correct, it needs welding.

The head is large enough that it greatly helps to have it pre-heated but you don't need it. Welding is a lot of work and then requires you re-shape the chamber back into the way it was and more than likely mill the head <~.005 because there is a pretty decent chance that right next to the deck will warp from the heat and whoever you have weld it could get some puddle on the deck.

Your logical choices are:

A. Forget it is there
B. Hit the areas with a sandpaper roll to smooth it down as much as you feel comfortable
C. Buy a new head

Welding is best left for rare/race engine heads.
