Oil catch cans remove oil mist from the air thats moving inside the engine, around the crank and rods. The steel wool is supposed to collect the oil from the air, and put them both were they need to be.

It depends on the catch can.. the SSR unit isn't baffled internally so it needs something to filter out the oil vapors as they flow through the can.
If the catch can is baffled internally, it will already do this with out the use of steel wool.

What grade of steel wool do you use? There are from very fine to coarse. Will the vacuum be strong enough to suck the steel wool bits through the tube into the engine?

don't sweat on the steel wool thikness, just get some non oxidizing material (copper, SS) and go with it.

Be wary if you have your catch can connected to drain directly back into the block. I'm not sure how long steel wool will remain intact before it begins to drain in small pieces with the oil.
(I'm just being cautious.)

yah, i found that if you have steelwool inside the can and it drains back into the block, that it fills up super quick. If it drains back into the block, it needs to be able to flow pretty good, so steelwool hurts it. Ive got the moroso catchcan.

why not just put steel wool in the factory catch can??
the only reasons i can see to use an aftermarket catch can are-
1. they look cool
2. to vent the oil vapors to the atmosphere.
