Ditto the above^^^ find another mechanic.

The ECU, [computer] has nothing to do with engine cooling, engine cooling is controlled by the water pump, thermostat, radiator and radiator fan, the ECU has no control over any of that.

What is the MM&Y of your car?

You said the over heating and CEL is "off and on", please explain.

As for cost, that depends on what is wrong, a CEL that goes on and off is normally related to emissions and that can be as simple as a loose or defective gas cap or as bad as a defective ECU, [computer].

Most shops will not charge more then half an hour labour to scan a car for trouble codes, to "reset" an ECU all you need to do is disconnect the batt. for 15 min. at the most. 94

Your "very good mechanic" is a complete moron who is speaking out of his ***. Good independent repair shops are more than capable of doing ANYTHING the dealer can do. The only time we send our customers to the dealer is for warranty work.

Try Google or Yelp to find a "good mechanic" in your area.

Yeah I'd say a second opinion and/or just taking it to a dealer would be a better option first.
