are motors tracked by serial number?

are motors tracked by serial number?
does anybody know how they track stolen motors? is it by the serial number or just the vin plate on the 97+ motors?

why do u want to know.....hmmmm...but the police can find out all sorts of information by the block number stamped into your block...that info is stored on some big *** nationwide databases for insurance companines and the such

well IF the motor has one/either, then yes you can track the block.. there are those of us that remove all of it for protection... both from thieves and from biters...

how does that work....when i got pulled over and they checked my first b16 with the engine block number and vin tags cutoff they charged me with vin modification.....does anyone know if it is really legal to take off the block number

If you take the VIN off and shave the serial number the engine will be considered stolen and the car will be impounded. If you cannot proove that the engine was purchased legaly within 6 months, the car will be destroyed.
Do not remove the VINs, go to your local DMV and ask them what you have to do.

removing the stamped in numbers does no good anyway, a simple acid test can raise the numbers to legible serial numbers in minutes...
Its all due to the density of the metal... when the numbers are stamped on, it increases the density of the metal immediately around the stamp, and with simple tools that some police carry around in their car, they can easily obtain that number.
I have seen it done at a dealership!
