LS EG Hatch Failed Smog at CA B.A.R. Results Posted!
Hey guys, my friend took his car to the CA B.A.R with an LS Swap and everything seemed to pass fine. The car is a 94 EG hatch and the motor is a 96 LS. The visual inspection failed only due to DC headers that the previous owner had. So we replaced them with stock headers and have an appointment for today at 1:30. I took the smog results to a smog tech and he said that it also failed due to maybe having a misfire. Here are the results.
15 MPH:
RPM - 1944
MEAS %CO2 - 15.0
MEAS %O2 - 0.0
MAX HC (PPM) - 92 FAILED
AVE HC (PPM) - 21
MEAS (PPM) - 160 FAILED
MAX CO (%) .55
AVE CO (%) - .06
MEAS CO (%) - .48
MAX NO (PPM) - 716 FAILED
AVE NO (PPM) - 150
MEAS NO (PPM) - 1325 FAILED RESLTS = FAILED
25 MPH:
RPM - 2235
MEAS %CO2 - 15.4
MEAS %O2 - 0.0
MAX HC (PPM) - 57 FAILED
AVE HC (PPM) - 13
MEAS (PPM) - 68 FAILED
MAX CO (%) .54
AVE CO (%) - .05
MEAS CO (%) - .06
MAX NO (PPM) - 764
AVE NO (PPM) - 136
MEAS NO (PPM) - 53 RESULTS = FAILED
Sorry for the long post but I was wondering if any smog techs out there can help me find out what I need to do to fix those results. Not too sure if this is in the right forum either.

High HC is running rich. High NOx is high combustion temps (which can be caused by running lean).
Both can't be happening at the same time. My guess is dead / dieing cat. Or, the mentioned misfire in 1 cylinder (produces HC) while the rest is running lean (produces NOx).
If there is a misfire, get that fixed before trying to smog it.

So how would I got about the misfire? Check timing, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

If it does have a misfire, it should throw a CEL (which is an instant smog failure). If you don't have a CEL and do have a misfire, consider trying a different ECU, as something is seriously wrong.

HC is a bit high, but not out of whack, likely not a misfire though, something smaller than that. Misfires create huge HC numbers and O2 numbers, which he does not have.
I would monitor the upstream O2 sensor in real time and see if it cycles correctly high and low. Lean or Rich bias sensors can cause and incorrect fuel adjustment. In this case it may be biased rich since the reading indicates lean, this would explain the high NOX at 15mph only. A weak O2 sensor heater will also cause problems because the sensor needs to be hot to produce accurate readings. At speed the exhaust is much hotter, this could explain the partially better HC readings at 25mph
CO numbers are well within range, so the mixture cannot be that overly rich. This leaves a starting to fail HC bed and a failing NOX bed in the catalytic converter, but test the front O2 before replacing.
The cat should not be fully disabled because there is no O2 reading so the cat is still absorbing oxygen.
