How much torque for spark plugs?

Default How much torque for spark plugs?

Just curious. I don't have a torque wrench so I finger-tightened my spark plugs until I couldn't tighten them anymore and then I turned them almost 1/2 a turn. Does that sound right? The manual specifies 2/3 turn but somebody on the board said 1/2 turn is fine (I'd rather go a bit too loose than too tight). Are they too loose/tight?

1/2 turn is fine for new plugs only.
2/3 wouldnt hurt either so do whhichever you are most comfortable with

Go w/ the two-finger rule. Use only two fingers on the ratchet (index & middle fingers), and turn as hard as you can with your fingers (don't pull back w/ your arm or wrist though!) to secure the spark plugs. Unless you're some overmuscled redneck, this rule works well enough so that all but the strongest people can properly torque spark plugs.

Finger tight means "as tight as you can turn the spark plug/bolt/screw/nut/etc. with your hand."

Add a ratchet with two fingers 2-3" from the fulcrum (pivot point of the ratchet); that's more than finger tight.

Use a torque wrench and you'll see that the two-finger rule is around 10-12lb/ft.
