Hayabusa in a Honda Beat

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
Note that a busa / car project can NOW be accomplished quicker and w less $$, based upon practical experience. At a minimum, due to the weight of the platform and using a 1st gen motor, a 2mm crank (2nd gen), shorter 1st gear, minor clutch work is suggested. RageMotorSport gear drive mated to a Quaife gearbox is maintenance-free and durable. Stainless exhaust w two brothers cans. The elec sys is simple, using the instrument cluster. Engine harness routes to main fusebox and cluster. Although the stater is available for backup, I remove an inline fuse and power the car from an external alternater (see pic). My setup is top speed at 152 and 5800rpm at 80mph.
I've put 20k miles on mine, just now returning from Key West.

I still love this project! I forget, is it RHD or did you convert it to LHD? Did you register this as a kit car or something to make it legal, or is there something unique about kei cars that allows them to get imported without issue? Got any more pics or details posted anywhere else, like a Facebook page or anything?

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
Largest expense will be the no-maintenance QBA2R (with ragemotorsport drive) or QBA11R Quaife unit at $4-5,000. Expensive, but well worth it. The assessory-drive pulley sysyem replaces the starter cover and is also worth it at $7-800. Electrical harness at $50-150. The elec set-up is very easy because the chassis sys and the motor sys only meet at the instrument cluster $75-125. the factory stator / rectifier remains installed and functional except I add an in-line fuse and remove the fuse - to be used in emergency if the drive belt breaks (I used the OEM sys once for a 9 month period without problems.
Depends on your platform: using existing CV axles, existing airbox, radiator? Weld an engine / differential cradle at $500. I added diffusers to direct air under chassis up on the header for cooling when moving. I added an adjustable thermostat and 3 fans to cool engine compartment when not moving. You will want a Power Commander V with Autotune, Quick Shifter, Speedo Healer, ATRE to allow proper running and operation of platform. Be advised the clutch linkage at the reservoir may require modification to allow a smooth transition instead of acting like a light switch. Pics are before i cleaned up the heat wrap and other dirt.

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
So to have a shop do everything with parts is this about $12,000?
How loud is it in the car?
I'm currently in Japan and looking to buy a 1991 Beat to bring back stateside when I return. There are some really nice body kits that allow wider tires, better engine cooling and a hard top. But the lack of power might be a deal breaker unless I can fix it when I return.
What about air conditioning, did you keep it?
How is 0-60mph now?
Do you have any videos of the car?

Re A/C sys: see attached pic of aux drive sys cover that drives the alt and AC pump.
Be advised that there is always room for improvement of the 0-5 mph start - even with the lwr 1st gear and 2mm crack (2nd gen motor). You can launch it though, but not desireable daily. However, acceration above 4-5k is very impressive - quicker than my C6 vette. Noise? material from secondskinaudio.com has provided a sufficient barrier between eng cmpt and interior for conversations.
Be advised that the production throttle cable will remain. I added a fast idle cable positioned under drivers seat. Both cables from the floor shifter will remain - fwd/aft movement to transmission and right/left movement to Quaife.
Using the OEM CVs may become an issue due to necessary articulation beyond design. I installed porche/VW set and they work great.
Make sure you calculate your gear ratio for the Quaife unit correctly. My initial assy allowed top speed of 94mph at 11k. Fun but not daily driver. I read further of the busa specs and found the 2nd gear reduction value and had to order another gear set at $$$.
One final thing I plan to do: remove / discard soft top and frame assy and trunk lid and have a decklid fab'd similar to the pontiac / saturn Solstice / Sky that will open from the front. Easy access, better sound containment and loss a few pounds.

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
Only thing that sucks is trying to get one of these legally registered for the roads in the US. Luckily, it will only be a couple years before the 1991 models qualify for the 25 year importation rule. Unless I can find one for sale that is already registered before then.

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
a 1st gen Miata w wasted eng is less than $1000. consider frt wheel drive miata like lotus 7 w busa. mount motor behind frt axel for balance and dump rear drive assy

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
When it comes to Miatas, I think there are other swaps I would prefer. The ultra small and ultra light Beat is part of the reason I love this swap. If I couldn't do that, I think I might prefer something like an Ariel Atom clone, such as the RCR Superlite Roadster.

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
I suppose the MR2 Spyder and Lotus Elise are also light enough to be good candidates. I'm still drawn to the Beat though. Perhaps I will just save my money for a couple years and look into importation in 2016 when they meet the requirements of the 25 year rule. I found a decent article on the process:

I am finding that its hard to find much info on the car in English though. There seems to be a small owner's club in the UK that has a bit of info posted.
I've read some complain that the range is terrible stock due to a small gas tank, but I haven't been able to find the fuel capacity yet. Marcair, do you use the stock fuel tank?

Re: Hayabusa in a Honda Beat
Replaced the two brother's exhaust with 3" shortened gen 1 cans. Has increased low end torque significantly (with HP reduction). Off the start is more smooth and quicker.
