Default DIY flat-faced valves?

Being that I have a welder, I thought about filling in the valve faces & grinding them flat to up compression a tad. Is it possible to do this without ruining the valves?

I would suggest against welding on valves.....the heat treatment issues and warpage would be the first two reasons that first pop up.

Warpage was my main concern, but I wasn't sure if it's a viable one or not.

You would most certainly change the grain structure of the valve material by welding on it, and since the grain is what gives a forging its strength, it would be compromised. Also, I think the added weight to the valve would be significant enough to reduce the max rpm without valve float.

You will absolutly ruin your valves, first it would be a tremendous amout of work to just ruin them and also you can achieve more compression by simply milling the head, you would also kill the flow , Air likes rounded edges not sharp ones,

The work involved is by no means "tremendous", milling a head is not a preferred way to up compression, (even if I was looking for a lot), and filling in the valve faces would not produce edges of any kind. Actually, it would get rid of the edges on the valve faces created by the concavity of them, in stock form.

i think he means the cavity is there to help the air flow,

but i could be wrong (but htat is also what i have read...)

Sitting here thinking abuot it....I would think that the concave area is a PLUS. Just like building abridge, the arch is the prime part of the structure. just like VWs Beatles idea....making it acrched makes it more rigid. Some food for thought. I have heard that flat faced valves suck anyways (issues with breaking and such).

as for welding valves Ive done it not on a honda though on a brigs and straton back in the day in an engineering project. low buck, will tell you not a good idea you can warp that valve faster than you can imagine successfully did it to a set but it was a process of building a spot bead cooling and doing that over about 20 times cant imagine what that did to the strength of the valve. just dont do it thats all i can say
