Default distributor questions

my JDM B16A decided to stop starting, cranks but no fire.

well, it <U>was</U> trying to fire but not keeping on going right at the start but not it doesnt want to fire at all.

getting a code 15 also, tested coil - primary resistance = 1.34ohms, secondary = 12'500ohms. honda manual for B16A2 says primary should be 0.8-0.9ohms, is this the same for the B16A?

there are sparks(tested with timing light) just no combustion, fuel seems fine with volume and pressure,

why would it be startable one minute then not the next?

thanks for any ideas, i may get a Blaster 2 coil - is this a good idea? or should i stay with Honda OEM?

anyone know how to fit the external coil? drill the cap and put a post on?

Well primary coil R is .4-.6 ohms for the F22B1 (vtec) and .6-.8 on the F22B2 (non-vtec). My Haynes Manual says if it exceeds the spec to replace it. On my F22B1 a code 15 is Ignition Coil Output.

They do specify that the measurement should be made at about 70 degrees F as it is temperature senstive.

You may be getting a spark but it may be weak. Since you are getting a code 15 it may be worth replacing it or getting and MSD like you are considering. However I am not sure if you need a functioning stock if you are putting in the MSD. Just browse the Haynes manual in your local parts store for the car the B16 and B16A come in. I guess they were De Sols?

For the MSD make sure you get the distributor cap they sell. Its about $35 but has the extra wire connector for the coil built in. Its look nice under the hood too.

thanks man, good points

temp makes a little difference, but im sure only in the range specified ie 0.8-0.9 i guess.

im sure it is the coil.

we dont have fancy stuff like MSD caps downunder - i will have to modify my cap myself.

anyone got a www site for a external coil fittment?

i dont think you would need a functioning stock in conjunction with teh MSD, but i guess ill find out...

thanks again,

When you go to an external coil, you take out the stock one.

When I first did this, I just drilled a hole & slid in a bolt that had an end big enough for a plug wire to fit over. Make sure that you seal the inside of the cap where the bolt comes through so that it's insulated.

good one, thanks for the clarity,

OK this is what im going to do -
remove stock coil from dizzy,
attach extended wires to teh +ve & -ve terminals,
drill hole in cap where the extension from the rotor conector ends(ensure insulation),
insert bolt (M4?) and screw a spark plug tip onto the end of the bolt,
mount coil away from heat,
attach wires,
start engine,
cheer and appluade!

sound OK?

Default Exactly

I'm not sure on the size of the bolt though. If you think of it, once you get it done, post what the size is, or maybe just e-mail it to me if you don't mind. That'll be good to know.

jah, no problems,

just getting prices on the MSD cap - $89 AUD - i guess this is retail...

stock honda cap is around $50, so it could be worth it?!?!

im not sure ...

i could just modify my *old* cap, but i really should replace it anyways, shouldn't i?

(go on, convince me to get the MSD cap

I have the msd cap. havent put it on yet but the NAPA parts store cap looks much more sturdy (thick). the msd cap is pretty nice though and you dont have to modify it.

Try http://www.manhonda.com/store/index.cfm

Enter MSD in the search box and you will get a listing of MSD products.

I just bought one for a 97 Accord for $38. Shipping to Australia mught be the killer though.

In the long run it might be less expensive to move to new england .

I'm probably out to lunch on your problem, but did you check just to confirm that you didn't skip a tooth or two on your timing belt?

yep, out to lunch - but i know you can help!

car has been run 37mins total,
was starting OK,
then a bit harder to start(twice),
then no start but trying to fire
then no start or fire.

engine is from an imported front clip(not started for over 18months),
intermittant code 15, primary resitance of coil = 1.34ohms
fuel pressure & volume OK
sparks firing OK (timing light confirmed)

i am sure it is the coil, im getting a Blaster 2 coil(MSD8202) and MSD modified cap (MSD8290)

any comments/suggestions?

just ordered the MSD coil and Cap,

we will know by thursday whether it is the problem, (im sure it can be the only thing - except maybe a dead ECU, but nothing indicates that this has occured)

then it's time for emmissions test...then noise test...then roadworthy...then registration...then cruise time!

(can you tell im being paitent?)
