Default California drivers...........Post those smog values for your Honda motor.................

For those of us who live in California or who plan to live to California, the God forsaken reality is that in order to register the car, the smog check has to be up to date every two years.

The majority of Honda owners have modifed or swapped engines which normally violate the California smog laws and fails visual and tailpipe checks. Therefore many choose to go the legit route and go to the smog ref, or many are forced to go to the smog ref by law enforcement.

Speaking of smog refs, the way you schedule one is to call the Bureau of Automotive repair smog referee scheduling center at (800) 622-7733.

Anyway, the point of this thread is to have as much participation as possible and serve as a resource to look up the actual maximum and average smog values based on a bone stock Honda motor. I would like to see as many of the Honda motors listed on this thread as possible..................year of motor, OBD series, engine block code, etc. The chassis and year of the car itself is much less important here.

All you gotta do is look at your last smog testing sheet and share those numbers with all of us here. I am not looking for your measured numbers, but the maximum and average values. This will allow members to be able to plan and research so they do not get into any legal or DMV pickles if they mod or swap thier motor. If you have a swapped motor and are not ready to take the official smog test, you can have an unofficial test done at most smog centers. Problem is, that the maximum and average values from the smog center computer will reflect the motor that is supposed to be in the car, not the numbers for the swapped motor. There seems to be no way to get the smog values for the motor you plan to swap into your Honda.

That is the major purpose of this thread. It would also be nice to hear any of the latest intel about anything else happening out there in regards to regulations, smog laws, smog referee idiosyncracies, etc.

For instance. When I had my motor checked at the smog ref in November 2006, my smog sheet listed the maximum and averages as:

<U>1995 OBD1 B18C1</U>

15 mph........HC(PPM) max=89, ave=21 / CO(%) max=0.53, ave=0.06 / NO(PPM) max=708, ave=150

25 mph........HC(PPM) max=54, ave=13 / CO(%) max=0.51, ave=0.05 / NO(PPM) max=746, ave=136

2007 test at the BAR ref(also got my sticker that day), my measured numbers included for S&G.

1998 OBD-IIA B18B
49 state spec, including cat.

15 mph | 1890 RPM | %CO2 meas: 14.7 | %O2 meas: 0.0 | HC(PPM) max: 60, ave: 9, meas: 59 | CO(%) max: 0.53, ave: 0.02, meas: 0.12 | NO(PPM) max: 459, ave: 57, meas: 161 | PASS

25 mph | 2077 RPM | %CO2 meas: 14.6 | %O2 meas: 0.0 | HC(PPM) max: 43, ave: 7, meas: 18 | CO(%) max: 0.51, ave: 0.03, meas: 0.05 | NO(PPM) max: 746, ave: 50, meas: 10 | PASS

It looks like I just barely passed the low speed HC test. In hindsight, it explains why the tech running the test seemed to take so long with the low speed test - I guess he was trying to get it to pass. Contrary to a lot of stories I'd heard about BAR refs being overly strict jerks, the ones who performed my inspection were all very friendly and helpful.

96-00 Honda Civic EX D16Y8

15mph | HC Max 64 / Ave 9 | CO Max 0.55 / Ave 0.02 | NO Max 477 / Ave 57
25mph | HC Max 47 / Ave 7 | CO Max 0.54 / Ave 0.03 | NO Max 764 / Ave 50

What I got (15/25): HC 64/12 | CO 0.01/0.03 | NO 0/0

This is with 00' B18C-R using P2T ecu...barely pass HC @ 15. Overall clean emissions.

<U>1994/5 (OBD-1) JDM B18c </U>

JDM engines are going to be held to the same standards as USDM engines. The MAX values for my JDM B18c are identical to Toy Civics for his MAX values. This is what was on my print out from my ( failed) ref appointment this morning.

15 mph........HC(PPM) max=89/ MEAS=151, CO(%) max=0.53/ MEAS=0.64, NO(PPM) max=708/ MEAS=2627!

25 mph........HC(PPM) max=54/ MEAS=69, CO(%) max=0.51/ MEAS=0.16, NO(PPM) max=746/ MEAS=716

It is a little more difficult to get ideal numbers with a JDM B18c because of the slightly higher compression ratio. Higher compression ratio's usually yield higher NOx numbers, which were sky high on mine (I even exceeded gross polluter limits!). Mine are REALLY high though. Therefore I am going to start the process of elimination and do a major tune up (plugs, wires, etc.) and do a bit more research on the causes of high NOx emissions. Let me know if you have any input or advice. I'll update any info I come across.

High NOx comes from high combustion temps. Higher compression, contributes to this.

crap. thats why i failed in my jdm d15b vtec-E. 1992 Federal VX here. the NOx was 2000 vs 9xx for passing.

I just put in a obd2 magnaflow cat after the donut. new wideband o2 that finally worked -ebay crap shoot with buttconnected $55 & a stock plug $90 version didn't work- .

new plugs & rotor. the miles on shell are about 283k, and i believe the charcoal canister too.
Would replacing the charcoal canister think ?? Otherwise i'll need the oem cat which mounts right by the head $200 or so & run 2 cats
