Default Rear view mirrors in a race car

Years ago I had a Wink multi-pane rear-view mirror and liked it a lot. It's time to get a mirror for the new car... I see there are now also one-piece curved mirrors (14-17") that do much the same. Anyone used both? Which did/do you like and why.

I've used both multi-pane and curved in my car and the curved mirror (similar to photo above) is better. With the mutil pane you need to turn your head too much. Donate your old mirrors to the SM guys because they drive like they don't have any.

I have the Longacre 17" curved mirror, and can see everything behind and to the right of the car. Works real well when I'm out there with the H1 guys closing at high speed.

I used a short (14")curved mirror for a while and I didn't like it because is was difficult to judge the distance of a closing car, and difficult to indentify it. Perhaps it was too short and too convex. The longer ones may work better. I went back to the tried and true 5 panel wink. When properly installed, there are no blind spots and you can see way back. They are about $25.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I liked the Wink (other then the mirrors falling out which RTV fixed.) I guess it's a bit of the unknown, I know the Wink but not the Longacre. Wink is cheaper, Longacre is simpler, maybe lighter, and doesn't have a dis-jointed image. I do wonder about the cars-are-closer-then-they-appear issue though I 'spose one just gets used to it.

14" Longacre here.

I found that it didn't show me everything on the passenger side BUT I could look to the right and see what I needed to.

It all but eliminated the blind spot on the left though - and that was a BIG one. GSRs have serious blind spots there to begin with. Add in a rollcage, race seat, 6-point harness and helmet and head-checking to the left is impossible and your drivers side door mirror is 93% useless.

Kinda OT - but what is the best way to remove the stock rearview mount from the windshield glass? I'm afraid if I just try to pry it off, I break the windshield....

Actually I'm running into the same problem. I have the stub of the mirror holder on the windshield, and I've put a lot of force on it and haven't been able to get it off. I feel like if I put much more force on it, i'll break the windshield. Have others done this... how did you get it off?

thx

Don't pull away from the windshield (if you are), push parallel to the windshield and see if that works, the glue is a lot easier to shear off than to pull apart.

Secure a piece of strong, thin wire (piano wire) around two wooden dowels with about 10" of wire in between. Slip the wire behind the mirror mount and pull both dowel handles downward on either side of the mount with a sawing motion until the wire has passed through the adhesive.

The windshield guys use a heat gun first, then pop them off. DO NOT just pry on it until it comes off - I've seen at least two of these projects take hunks of lamination with them...

Hell, I'm annoyed by the concavity of the stock mirror in my CRX...I'd go with a Wink.

Ditto. I found the Longacre mirror to be curved too much. It didn't give a realistic picture of how far behind me the other car was. The All View is the best mirror I've tried. What's even better, is Greg can get them with a H-T discount

Who's Greg..

Who sells the AllView anyway? On their site the only dealer I recognise is Stock Car Products. Anyone else have a better price?

having used the curved longacre mirror, i actually didnt like it. it was better than just stock, but it is needlessly curved in the horizontal, which expands the top and bottom view angle, which just shows the roof and car floor. it would be better if it was just curved in the vertical, which the all view is. i saw it in gregs car and it really is the PERFECT race mirror. wink mirrors do a great job too, but allview definately works in a smaller package, and gives you all the vision you need.

actually, if i were to mount my used longacre mirror again, id place it on the dash just for the camera to see to capture whats going on the left and right and rear, all within view of the camera.

I had a 4-panel Wink mirror (mounted on the dashboard) on my Triumph racecar, so I put a 4-panel Wink on my CRX.

Cheap and easy to install.

I need all the vision to the rear as I can get, and it has worked very well.

I also put a small fish-eye mirror on both my outside mirrors.
