15x8 tires for solo and track days
Hello
Anyone from warmer climate have input for a 225 45 15 tire? I see bfg released new rival s 1.5.
I was planning re71r but they do not have a 225. Not sure I should stretch a 205 on 8in rim. Seems like the best tire in our region.
Any feedback appreciated would like to get tires ordered for first event in April up here in the tundra.
Thanks
Chris

Re: 15x8 tires for solo and track days
Chris, need more info. What car and class? I'm assuming "Street" or "Street Touring."
NT01, RA1 are not "Street" class legal. I doubt that the Nexen and the Falken will be as competitive as the "hot" autox tires, but might be a good value. I think the RS4 and Rival S V1.5 are good options. If and when the new Dunlop comes out I'm sure it will be good as well. I don't worry a whole lot about being competitive at autox anymore, so I just use used 205 RE71R's (on 7" wheel) and they're awesome but they probably leave a little bit of time on course to a wider tire. All that said, if I were you I would go with the newest Rival. The old Rival was good on track as well, but be warned they're awful in the rain.
Edit: Just found this...

I think the new Rival it will be. I liked the original rival i had they are just 3 years old and many heat cycles. Kind of like driving on bricks now. Definitely enjoyed the minimal wear though. They would probably be an awesome track tire.

The new rival S is going to wear much like the RE71R. Keep that in mind if you are wanting a tire that lasts and can maintain consistent lap times over a 20-25 minute session. Many people that run the RE71R here in Texas heat can finish off the tire in a weekend. They are great at setting fast laps for time trial, but wear too quickly to be a track day tire for me.
I'd look at the new Hankook RS4 if you want a 225 tire, from what I've seen it sounds like it'll be a little closer to the true 200TW category in terms of tread life but with improved grip. (Similar to the Dunlop ZII, Hankook RS3, Original BFG Rival)
A 205 is great on an 8" wheel. If you aren't pushing a lot of power probably end up being as fast as a 225 on an 8 with less sidewall squirm and better feel.

I wouldn't count out the Nexen SUR4G so quickly, I'm hearing really good things.
The G at the end is the "new" compound that's supposed to be the business.

Nexen N FERA SUR4G:
Nexen is serious about their motorsports entry and is already updating their tire. No word yet as to test data, but it's expected out in March 2017 and if it improves upon the SUR4, will be very quick indeed. There was an article in SportsCar (SCCA's club magazine) about Nexen's tire testing in development of the SUR4G, and the testers all came away impressed with several of the prototypes.

Re: 15x8 tires for solo and track days
I ended up ordering bfg rival s 1.5 from a local tire shop that is getting them from bfg directly. Should hopefully have on Monday.
So I'll see how these do this year. A little more than I wanted to spend but couple years ago when trying to get rival I needed to wait since they were so hard to get. So just ordered them.
