Not sure if this is true but a paint rep at our shop told me that if you spray 1 coat of brown first, and than your black coats over top, it will give the black paintjob a more deeper looking finish. Is there any truth to this?

umm not to sure. Ive never heard of anyone doing that before. But I honestly dont think it would. On straight black cars with no metallic, you will get a deeper black look if you spray a coat of black sealer down first and then your base coat. Also you will a deeper in any color the more clear you put down. Like on black you would spray 2 coats then wetsand that coat and spray 2 more coats and it will look like a black mirror

well im doing BMW Carbon Black, its got metalic and blue pearl. Im thinkin 3 coats paint, 2 clear, wetsand, let it sit for a bit let it breathe, than 1 more coat of clear. It seems that the more coats of clear you put on without sanding the more orange peely it looks, thats why im thinkin just 1 coat after wetsand?

Haha it all depends on whos spraying, what your spraying etc. I would just shoot the base, denib and shoot one more coat of base. Then 2-3 coats of clear, let dry then wetsand and buff.

ya thats another good idea, i just hate polishing a whole complete car, it takes a looong time to get all the little scratches out and than the swirls lol

to get a black paint job to look deep you need to lay 2 coats of clear wet sand, lay another coat, wetsand, lay 2 more coats and wetsand and buff. it is something they do on street rods all the time it takes a lot of time but the payoff is worth it.

I've never heard brown, but I have heard of mixing black into the clear and spraying a coat of clear with a bit less black in it until your last coat of clear is just straight clear without anything mixed in.

Just put a good black sealer, 3 coats of black base, 2-3 coats of clear, then fully wetsand(car show finish) or denib then lay 2 more coats of clear and let it flow out...Wont need much buffing just denib after that..

The black is just going to cover the brown so its pointless.

Should i be using sealer? The car will be black primer, and some red parts. I thought the finish is better with less material on the paint job, like no sealer is better just do base and clear?

just depends how u spray but generally a dark color paint=a dark primer/sealer. If ur a noob a black primer or sealer will help hide thin spots in the paint.

ok thanks guys!

one more question, how long should i let the clear sit before i can wetsand it and clear it again. Should i wait like a week for all the solvents etc. to have a good time to escape/cure. Or should i just bake it for 40mins and wetsand right away and put another 2 coats on, and than after that just let it air dry.

i'd say just bake it and then wait a day. no need to wait a week. i'm in high school still but in auto body. we've always just sprayed base then 2-3 coats of clear and then wetsand and buff. would it be more time efficient to wetsand after 2 coats of clear to get it smooth and then just spray another coat of clear? eliminate having to buff it.
