get some water in a bucket. add 5 drops dawn dish soap. purchase 1500 and 2000 grit sandpapers. using the paper grits that i just mentioned will take a little longer to get the surface flat BUT will help to prevent you from sanding through the clear into the paint. once you get it flat with the 1500 move to 2000 and sand in only one direction. then buff, using a rubbing compound. then you can get your glazes and polishes or whatever.

No, the dish soap helps to lubricate/let the water stay "slippery" longer. I use meguairs m105 and m205. If you can't find those, there are consumer grade rough equivalents (ultimate compound and ultimate polish).

Re: cut and buff on a budget
use 3M purple finishing film. =D no need to wet sand. less loading than wet sanding less pig tails and longer disc life.

Never even heard of it. I know some guys skip the wetsand and just use 3m superduty, but what is purple finishing film? Would love to see a product video or something.
