2010 Pilot with VTM-4, check engine code P3400, possible excessive oil consumption
Hello, I'm posting here out of desperation and hoping someone could help me. I have a 2010 Honda Pilot 4wd with 69000 miles. It popped a check engine light with P3400 error code then VTM-4 light kicked in while I was driving over a mountain pass in blizzard condition last week. Worse yet, I lost 4 wheel drive and made 7 hour trip, barely, over the pass. When I get home low oil light flickers on and off. I had 30% left on oil life per display screen.
Take it to a dealer and asked about TSB 11-033. They say this TSB was done when I brought it in for earlier check engine light which I pad $135 for "hooking up to a computer diagnostic" and now wants to do 1000 mile oil consumption test. They say there was no oil left on the dipstick. Now I am worried. Did I ruin my engine? I ask what will happen after 1000 mile oil consumption test and the service manager says they will report it to HMC. I ask what will happen if/when they report this (meaning if my Pilot is a victim of excessive oil consumption problem). They say they don't know and ask me to call HMC. I call HMC, James (won't give out last name for security reason) says my car is out of warranty and I will have to pay out of my own pocket to find out what is wrong with the vehicle and will not consider multiple check engine lights, excessive oil consumption as a "defect". My HMC rep says my problem does not fall under recent settlement which covered excessive oil consumption because it popped P3400 error code and claims that the excessive oil consumption settlement only dealt with "misfiring cylinders". I guess they don't want to stand behind their product. Message I get from HMC is "your car is out of warranty and you are SOL".
This is very disappointing. As a young man, I owned a 89 Prelude then 2001 Odyssey when I started a family. Now, with 2010 Pilot and considering myself a loyal customer, I think this is not the way to earn my future business.
I am seeking anyone out there with the similar problem and perhaps suggestions as to how to deal with HMC in recognizing this as a defect. A vehicle with less than 70k miles should not have to go through multiple check engine lights, excessive oil consumption and cylinder management not working properly. They reset the computer so all the lights are gone and VCM seems to work (albeit poorly) but my future with Pilot is uncertain. Please help. BTW, I did a quick search and found nothing with P3400 codes.
