98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
98 civic, OEM headlights.
I'm looking for a little info on what projectors to use, i've basicly narrowed it down to using morimoto Minis, but which ones?
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...roducts_id=236
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...oducts_id=3181
Was planing to use my old DDM tuning ballasts, and I don't know what kind of bulbs yet.
Any tips are welcome! Thanks!!

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
oddly enough i googled looking for tips and this thread popped up, so OLD THREAD BUMP time.
Anyways almost 3 years later I finally got around to ordering. TRS FXR kit will be here sometime this week.
FXR 3.0 3'' projectors
TRS D2s 50 watt HID kit along with the 6000k bulbs ( I'm told it will end up around 5000k with is fine with me)
TRS relay harness
Apollo 2.0 shrouds
About a month ago my friend bought the Mini H1 kit and we put it in is Camry. I was very impressed with the H1 but decided to see what the FXR's are all about this time.
Now then, the orginal question.... I was thinking use JB weld ( the stick) to hold the projector while the vertical/horizontal down and then drill 4 holes and use nuts/bolts to fully secure it. Is this good, or should I just JB weld them in?

Interested to see how you run all the wiring. I've been staring at my harness trying to figure out how I'm going to take it apart and route it so that it looks clean and integrated into the factory stuff.

i actually still have my DDM tuning relay harness in the car and was planning to pull it today. I'll get some pictures of it. The ballasts are already out so there's not much to see, but you can get an idea of where I put things.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
ended up getting tied up and wasn't able to get to it, but the kit came in today!
I'm going to try to get it started tomorrow.
The FXR projectors are WAY bigger than I thought they would be.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
"morimoto minis" fx projectors are bi-xenon I think (bigger than others)
please do yourself a favor and get a morimoto ballast kit or denso no point getting fx projectors with shakey power
jb weld and some long screws will work fine add some silicone to water proof things new rubber seals etc

I ordered the FXR Stage 3 kit, so all Morimoto.
Hoping to start install today.

Spadam, you figure anything out with the harness? i'm quickly coming to the realisation that there is no way to run this harness cleanly without cutting it up into pieces and extending every wire. Nothing is even close to long enough.

No I haven't really had the time lately but I'm right there with you. I stretched it out across the bay and I'm thinking I'm going to have to de-pin and get creative. Too busy with an important job lead to worry about it right now though
You got the full kit with the relay harness and everything, right? I was actually thinking that I needed to run the power up through the horn/headlight harness and keep everything else local. That would actually end up with having to shorten most things.

Yeah, I got the full kit.
The power wire is the least of my worries.
The length of the wire to the ballast, and Hi's are REALLY short....
what I might end up doing later is ordering AMP to D2S adapters with the extension cables. that should give me a lot more length and i'll be able to put the ballasts behind the bumper.... i'm just going to toss it in for now. lol

Ah. I just ended up using my stock ones.
Got one in and almost done, just fighting the aiming of it.
Take my advice, use JB KWIK!!
I didn't and it was a horrible mistake. i think I'm going to just drive out to Homedepot and get it for the next one. I cut the hole a bit big and used the whole stick for the one.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
I post some pictures a little later.
So far cost wise. $315 shipped for the FXR Stage 3 kit, and about $30 for bolts/nuts, and JB weld.
going to get the other knocked out tonight, but it wont go back together until tomorrow. Going to take the lenses into work and wet sand the inside to see if I can get rid of some weird marks on them.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
With mine it required cutting/trimming, kind of a pain in the ***.
Worst part of this hole thing, getting the headlight apart, and the reflector out.
Trimming is pretty simple, just a little time consuming.
Aiming is simple just requires patience to get it perfect.
In my case, as I want to keep the back of the headlight as stock looking as possible, it basically forces me to remove the headlight to take the bulbs out. Not that big of a deal to me though.

How do you go about setting them in place and the ability to aim them once the entire head light is installed
How do you point them while installing and jb welding in place?

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
You'll aim them with the lense off.
With the JB weld, ( the stick stuff) build that up around the edges of the projector that touch the reflector. Give it a good "push", and then aim the projector by moving it up/down side to side. VERY LITTLE adjustment makes a BIG difference.
The JB weld ( use the KWIK stuff) cures and holds the projector in place.
In my case, I'm going to drill holes and bolt the projector in, but you could easily just use JB weld on the back of the reflector/projector for a more secure fit.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
What I did was focused on getting the horizontal aim since you really can't adjust that once they are in place.
I shot a little high on where I would like the vertical alignment, but I'm planning to use the headlights to get that right. That way if I ever decide that I want to change it I didn't limit myself too much.

Hmmm so if you do the jb weld methos once the weld cures thats it no more adjustments?
Im just wondering if you set them straight then put them on the car they might end up higher or lower than the other
I might be over thinking this tho
Im curious how your projectors light output turns out. Thats mainly my gripe with choosing a projector.

No more adjustments with the projector itself. You will still have the adjusters built into the headlight to play with.
Aim them while on the car.
I'm the same way, I over think things a lot also, and did with this as well. One day I just **** it and ordered them.
I just drove the car with one projector, aimind like ****. Lights the sky up. With that said, I am VERY impressed. A little too much foreground light, but that might have something to do with how I have the projector aligned.
the color flicker, Holy ****. it's AWESOME!. Running 50watt with 6000k bulbs.
Phone was too dead to get pictures, but I'll snap some tomorrow night before I put the other side in.

Re: 98 civic: Hid retrofit questions
Yeah you can get away with pretty large projectors inside the EK housings. Some of the smaller ones like EG's and 8th gens force you to use the Mini H1's. I'm interested to seeing the results/output with those FX-R's though.
The versions we produce for our customers utilize the Mini D2S's for convenience and ease of install, but I'd imagine the output on the FX-R's might be a bit better. I'm in for photos.
+1 for using full TRS components though, their HID kits and hardware has always been in a class of their own.
