I would start with an $8k budget. If done right(search for deAls) you can do a proper K swap with good components for that.

Thats about what I'm planning to spend hopefully it stay around there that doesn't seem too bad to me

There is a guy here in Oregon selling K24s for 1000.00 he doesn't care what year it is. that's what he asks for. so I took the bait and hunting I am for parts. It's not cheap. but more HP than my GSR and even better MPG. You just cant go wrong with K series.
