K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I am in the process of swapping in a K20A2 into my 1988 Fiero GT. The car has 15k miles on it from new. Its been a test bed for many parts I have developed over the years. I have partnered up with Euro Pacific Auto Tech here in Panama City, Fl. I don't know anything about Honda's. My buddy Antonio talked me into this after watching vids of the K swapped MR2 on YouTube.
Have a look at my build series I will be posting on YouTube. Be gentle, its my first time!
Current engine is a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix L32 3800sc mated to a F23 5 speed from a cobalt. Good for approximately 300whp
Vid!

Nice! You on PFF? I'm on there, same username. My biggest concern with this swap, and I know its not going to be a popular comment on here, is I hope it doesnt sound like a Honda with a fart can on it.
Its looking like we are going to either go K20A2 or K24A2 with K20A2 head and the TSX's 6 speed. Add w2a intercooling and a BW60-1 turbo = yay!

I think it will sound great. I saw old Lotus Elan at an autocross once and was not real impressed until I heard it crack VTEC.
The K20 is a very nice sounding motor. It has a very racecar exhaust note with the right silencer. It won't sound like a grocery getter with a fart can.
If I had an 88 like you, I'd do more with it. BUT the 87 with the crap suspension, there's no helping it, AFIK.

Sure there is. I have an 87 as well. I have an 88 rear cradle and Held tubular suspension up front with QA1 coil overs. Also, I think the 84-87 have the BEST steering feel. The 88's is too light in comparison. 87 w/88 cradle = awesome

I've honestly been thinking about selling it.
Only 2 owners, myself and a friend was the original. 90k miles. The interior is showroom condition, seriously.

Very nice ride! You weren't joking, it sure is clean. Notice the difference between my lip spoiler and the stock wing?
Edit: I mean just DAMN!!! Look how good the lines look on a Fiero all these yrs later. Think about it, the newest one is nearly 30yrs old.

I picked up a complete 2008 TSX K24A2 w/ 6 speed. I called the driveshaft shop today, $850 for their level 2 axles with a 2-3 week delivery time. On it goes. I have to run my spare engine cradle to the shop on Monday, that way we can mock the drivetrain up w/o having to pull the one out of my car. Next vid once we have it mounted.

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
I have been working on the car a bit. Really just cleaning up the engine and ordering parts. Trying to remove bits that wont be needed, like the power steering, and assessing what needs to be serviced and or replaced.
Engine before:
Engine after:
When a GTR comes to visit
Next I am going to pull the head, make the decision if I am going to install a K20 head, install ARP headstuds and Cometic MLS head gasket.

Oh yeah, the community is huge. The build thread for my '88 has over 80k views. They are a great bunch and help each other out quite a bit. Plus, if you want to do a swap, suspension or brakes etc, there is a kit out there to do it.

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Quick update.
The blue 87 GT is getting an '06 RSX-S K20Z1/6MT. My son just bought the drivetrain yesterday.
Here is some parts **** for your viewing pleasure.
I bought a clutch! CC Super single
Yanked the head to send it over to Tim's to get cleaned and tested.
Looking pretty bare!
My Honda HG and ARP headstuds arrived today.

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Not alot to report. Been a busy month at the shop so my project was on hold.
I finally got the head back from the machine shop. It checked out good, full valve job was also performed. We managed to install it using a OEM Honda HG and ARP headstuds. We should start mounting the drivetrain on the cradle next week. Expect a video shortly after.
I am looking for:
Sidewinder type schedule 10 turbo manifold
Swivel coolant neck
dual feed fuel rail
AEM ECU

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Sorry I haven't updated this in a while. I have been really busy getting parts manufactured for Fieros (parts in the pic below)! We have the engine & turbo mocked up and I dropped off a spare engine cradle so we can start mocking up the drivetrain this week.

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
It was ok. with the SC it was only about 300whp. When it was turbocharged it made 460/475 @ the wheels on low boost and snapped the flywheel bolts. The trans is a F23 5 speed.

Re: K swap 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Nice yeah its hard to keep the 3800 series 2 or 3 together with it being modded, I was running in my previous project 99 gtp, XPZ cam .580 lift, yella terra valve train, bigger push rods L32 head swap, full stack intercooler, gen v swapped, on a stock trans made 385 to the wheels... So much money invested and not a lot of returns. Wasted so much money lol. It will be awesome to see it with a K-series instead of a 3800series lol. Ill post your progress on the 3800 grand prix pages I am on, it will cause a lot of butthurt for others... lol
