K-series Cams and VTC
I was talking to this guy about how he should grab a set of cams for his 08 civic si, he told me that cams are pointless for the K-series because you can adjust the overlap and duration with the VTC, I knew he was wrong but could not tell him why, somebody explain to me why he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Re: K-series Cams and VTC
after market cams have more lift and duration compared to stock cams.....Yes you can get more power out of stock cams by adjusting the VTC,but you can do the same with aftermarket cams.

That's what I thought, from what I read, you can only adjust the cam angle. I was really confused when he said aftermarket cams were pointless. You can't adjust the duration and lift.

seems like he does not know what he is talking about.
vtc allows you to change the cam angle at what ever rpm you want. Therefore your cam will change its cl (centerline) and allow for more or less overlap between your in (intake) and ex(exhaust) cams.
With being able to change the cl on the fly, the motor will make better power because at different rpm the engine requires different overlap of the in/ex cams.
When you go to a bigger cam, you can do the same thing, but you have to make sure that you check your p2v (piston to valve) and v2v (valve to valve) clearances with the vtc gear at 0* and full advanced, especially if you are running bigger valves. But that's another can of worms.
