R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
I have swap the R18A1 for the R18Z1. the problem am having is that the crank sensor on the A1is on the left side and the Z1 is on the right side. ecu is not reading the crank sensor. what do you guys suggest?

yes, is plug in. i even swap the straight crank sensor from the A1 to the Z1 which has a 90 angle sensor. I have spark, just not continously.its a 3 wire plug, I have 5 volts on 1, 12v on 2, and ground 3.

Re: R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
any progress? I'm in the same boat, Z1's are going for $400 at junk yards with less miles, the A1's are going for double that with more miles. I'd prefer the Z1

Hey I just put a z1 in my 06 civic ex I get crank but no start do I need to get z1 ecu and wire harness to make it run? I got the engine for just $300 with 40k miles so why not

Re: R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
I recently installed the R18Z on my 2006 Civic. Im also having problems with the Crankshaft Possitioning Sensor. Has anyone found what to do to fix the problem?

Re: R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
Not even a cricket around to make some noice lol. Well I did some looking around. The Crankshaft Pulser plate is different in the R18A1 and the R18Z1. My cousin read a forum regarding a subaru with a JDM engine and this was the same problem that prevented the engine from starting. Once they switched the plate it instantly started. So I went to Ebay to look what the crankshafts looked like and realized the pulser plate in the 2014 R18Z1 has alot more teeth than the R18A1. The other problem may be the sensor being in a different location so replacing the Pulser plate may be a good start but dont forget the angle being sensed at is totally different and that could pose a problem. Drilling the hole in the front is not simple to imstall the sensor so why not use the lower block off the A1 into the Z1.... Anyone let me know how it goes. Its too cold outside so Im not going to try anything anytime soon. Thanks and good luck

Re: R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
totally unrelated and maybe not even helpful but i know that when i swapped a b20 back in my crv the block i used didnt have a crank position sensor but the ecu requires that signal to run. i ended up splicing into the cam position sensor and using the cam position signal to feed the crank position wires going to the ecu. just a thought. alhough i could be terribly wrong

Re: R18A1 to R18Z1 swap
Little side note: I own a 1998 contour SVT. Since I’ve owned it I have installed two 3.0L engines (from a Ford Taurus, the contours came with a 2.5) and to allow the computer to get a proper reading on the crank sensor you had to flip the little gear that has teeth and then a decent gap (this gap allows the magnetic sensor to send a 5v signal to the computer to communicate where the timing is)
im not sure if ford had extra parts and was like “hey we got more of these let’s just flip them”
many guys doing this common swap would do all the work and forget to flip that gear and would have to take the motor back out to get to it lol.
Im curious what the solution is.
by the way what brought me hear is what’s the main differences in a Z1 and A1 motor? (R18)
