Default Start up noise

My 2000 s2000 makes a strange noise when i start it in the morning, it almost sounds like the noise you get when you try to start a car that is already started (that's not what I am doing). I thought it might be my timing chain but it doesnt happen every time i start the car, so that made me think maybe its not the chain. When it is cold it happens too but only the first time I start the car after that its fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Most likely the timing chain tensioner that leaks down overnight, and more when it's cold. I just changed mine and haven't heard the noise since.

I had 103k miles on my S when I bought it and it was doing it then. Just replaced it at 108k and hasn't done it since and now have almost 115k.

Change the tensioner first...it can be done in 15 - 20 minutes. That'll save you a lot of time and money. Heck...do it yourself.

Got mine from HardTopGuy.com for about $125.

I'm looking into making a manual adjustment version of it that will never ever cause this problem, as opposed to an OEM unit that will weaken and fail again.

Hey, I read this thread and another one like it seeing as my s2k is making this noise every now and again. What I didn't find though is if it will hurt the car not to replace the tensioner? The noise only happens every now and again so I don't see the point in paying a hundred dollars or so to fix something that won't hurt the car.

Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

probably the Timing Chain Tensioner (TCT). They seem to go on some people, and then not on others. If it sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of your 10 speed its most likely the cause!

^^ thank u since it hasnt been stated liek 5 times allready.

anyways change it why run a risk of skiping a tooth and having to pay atleats 10X of what the tct costs.

lol, I'll take that as its not harmful

Yea the noise is the same one described in this thread and in multiple others. If its the tensioner I didn't know whether or not that would effect anything over time. I guess the worst that can happen is I need a new timing chain...
