Ok, so my motorized antenna finally crapped out after ~13 years of faithful service. The motor is runs, and the antenna isn't bent. It will go up if I push it down, but won't go back down. I the the mechanism is pretty much shot. (I am a mechanical engineer adn I'm pretty confident that this is the case.)

Anyway.. I searched around and the concensus seems to be that I can get either a rubber s2000 antenna, or one from radio shack if I want a stationary one to mount in the stock location.

Two questions:

1. Does anyone know if I would need anything special to mount them? Will they mount in the factory spot using only what parts they come with?

2. Any pictures?

i would go with a honda insight antenna like i have. rubber just like s2000 but taller for better reception. you can even use the s2000 antenna kit some guy sells on this board. if you want pics i can take a couple.

Let me make sure I understand you. I would need:
-an antenna from an insight (nothing else, just the part that screws in)
-mounting kit for s2000 to prelude?

I guess I am unsure what the mounting kit is that you are referring to. Does it allow the prelude's existing mount to accept another antenna, or is it something different all together?

OK, I bought the antenna listed on ebay. It seems to be an amplified s2000 replica. I'll post pics when I am done.

here are the pics..excuse the dirty car; it's been apart and in my garage for at least a month. i like the antenna, rubber so it won't break and about 1/2 the size of the original ugly-*** chrome one. and i get great reception even though i'm in the country.

^^ nice, I'm guessing that wasn't a direct swap, was it? What did you need to properly seat that antenna? Does anyone know if that amplified s2000 antenna on ebay will (as the description says) install without modification into the 4th gen?

Well, I just ordered it and its shipping out tomorrow. I'll post more info up here after I try to install it. If it isn't a direct drop-in as advertised, I am definitely going to return it, though.

Oh, and yonkinator, thanks a lot for the pics, it definitely gives me a good idea of what mine should look like.

welcome...btw, my antenna is tilted in and back for a reason. you can move it around to w/e angle you want.

so is that s2000 antenna still motorised though? (as in does it go up and down when the car is turned on and off) Or is it just fixed?

It is fixed in place. It uses the power line that would be supplying power to the up/down motor in order to run its amplifier.

I just pushed mine till where I liked it.. Motor doesn't work. (actually, people at a carwash place pushed it down, then I pulled it up, and kinda liked the look, so I didnt mind..)

it's much easier to IM the guy that made the kit: RstoR is his name. the parts are basic but for $15, i saved myself the trouble of looking all over bumblefuck for 'em cause i live in the cooountry.

Ok, I just installed the s2000 kit that I bought off of ebay. It is made by a company called lo-custom. I paid $30 plus shipping.

The parts in the kit seemed to be of good quality, although I am no expert.
It was listed as fitting several hondas made around the time as the 4th gen prelude, and it became apparent that this kit was not made with the prelude in mind primarily.

The fit was good but not great. The rubber base that the antenna sits on was a little too small for the large opening existing for the OEM antenna. I finagled a rubber grommet of my own to seal the gap because I didn't like the solution proposed on their website involving applying silicone to the gap. I have no idea why they wouldn't provide a base with slightly larger flanges in order to ensure that this model fits all of the listed car models perfectly. Still, it looks great from the outside of the car and does not seem "makeshift" at all.

I had to drill a single hole into the inner frame of the trunk, although you could use an existing hole if you don't mind sacrificing one of the clips that hold the trunk liner in place.

The sound quality is excellent, at least as good as stock.

Overall, I'd give this kit a 7 out of 10 flaming turds. It is a little pricey for an antenna, but the quality seems very good. I would think much more highly of it had they fixed the simple fitment issue of the antenna base. Still, I am happy with it and am keeping it on my car.

Please post a pic and don't forget, like all the other mishap threads I subscribe to! *are you sorry for me yet?* I have wanted to replace my busted antenna for a while now, and haven't yet for hopes of a better way. LOL.

I've been wondering if the antenna from a 350Z will work. They look pretty smooth. Hmmmm.....

It is at least as good as stock. I had both units side by side, and swapped the antenna plug back and forth. I actually got a little less static when using the rubber antenna, but I don't have any numbers to support this holding up in every case.

Now that I've been using it for a few days, I have nothing but good things to say about it.

If any of you guys want to replace the annoying stock power antenna, heres a great product. (Metra 44-UA20 ELECTRONIC MAGNETIC ANTENNA) Cost about $25 from the site below. You can completely remove the stock antenna and plug the hole for weight savings or just leave it unplugged. It is very easy to install.
Heres some install pics on my Prelude.





The FM/AM signals is very clear and no more click click click sound of the broken power antenna.
