Shredded timing belt?
Well, at the moment im waiting for parts to be delivered. So the story goes, water pump went, so I had the timing belt replaced also. I drive about 60 miles and hear sounds coming from in the timing cover. I had it taken apart and we see that half the belt was gone, im talking about the WIDTH of it. Note that before having it taken apart, the car would not start again after shutting it off. I've read about broken belts and the chances of bent valves... but is a belt that shredded width wize the same as a snapped belt? What are my chances of bent valves? h22

Re: Shredded timing belt?
After my swap, the timing belt did the same thing, and it was brand new also.. I don't think I had 50 miles on it either. Didn't seem to bend any valves though. Replaced it and was fine..
So it didn't break or anything while driving? If not, you should be ok..
Mine was shaved down to about 1cm and then broke while I was driving normally, not hard or revving high.

Re: Shredded timing belt?
ok, when i first got mine, my now brother in law just did the timming belt for me since he didnt know when it was, if ever done. i was able to make a 200 mile trip right after the repair. the next morning on the way to work, i make the first turn at the end of my road and the car dies at 2200 rpm, wiht my foot out of it in the turn. all it did was turn over. i poped the valve cover and i see the same thing. the the pully that tensions both of the belts was loose. i bent 4 valves on that one. i hope your luck is beter then mine.

Re: Shredded timing belt?
^^Dang that sucks.. :S
I was driving probably 40-45ish MPH in 5th, and started to go up and hill and dropped in down into 4th and drove just a bit before it just cut off. I coast over to the side.. Tried to crank it once, no go. As I'm sitting there I know what it is, even without checking.. I just knew it was the Timing Belt, would've bet money. Wait a few minutes, once more, still nothing. So I get out pull the (frickin' hot) valve cover off, and see the 1cm wide belt, and was like, "Ah... Frickin' knew it!!"
And I had to be in the upper 3,000RPM range at least if not possibly a little higher.. But didn't damage anything luckily..
What Timing Belts are you guys using? Brand/Manufacturer?

Re: Shredded timing belt?
it didn't break or snap, like i said.. it shredded and i see the shavings all over inside the cover.. waiting for it to be replaced, i hope theres no bent valves. But the motor does have 214xxx miles.. lol. I might just buy a new motor if the worst happens.
