I just got my front brake pads changed and the rotors resurfaced, but there is still a squeaking noise when I press on the brakes. Could it be my rear brakes? Should I change those also? When braking, is it just the front brakes that slow the car down or is both the front and rear? Around what mileage do brake pads need to be changed? I have an 01 base with 42,000 miles on it.

both the front and rear slow the car down, but the front moreso.. change your rear brake pads, that is most likely what it is.. most brake pads will squeek at partial/little pressure, and since the rear dont have as much of an effect as the front do at stopping the car, its probably your rear brake pads.. just a thought..

brake pads last a long time in normal driving. some get 90,000 out of their brakes or more.

squeaking comes from your pad shims, usually. use a stop squeak from pep boys and that should do it.

agressive brake pads usually squeak no matter what, but OEM brake pads should be silent.

you most likely dont need new pads, its probably squaking due to dirt and rust build up...buy some disc break cleaner and see if that works

no harm in checking your rear pads.
when you changed the front pads did you clean the calipers and put grease on the back of the pads and on the ends that sit in the calipers. if not this could be why it is still squelling.

So...........what happens if you run your brakes without the backings/shims?

it should not matter to much as long as you grease them up.

What he said. I haven't run with shims over 2 years, no problems here.

Buy the lil packet of stop squel stuff... it's $.99 and totally worth it.

Also, should do the rear brakes too.. considering pads are like $25 and rotors are $15/piece.

I got them changed by a mechanic near my house. There was a little packet of black gel or grease that came with the oem brake pads. He said he used it.
