Default Self Head Polishing

I was just wondering if anyone has tried to polish their own heads.

I would assume it couldn't be that difficult of a task. Wondering if anyone has any steps/process to do this.

polishing the exhaust ports is said to be "OK"

It really depends on who you talk to.

i know that JUN likes to remove the casting from both intake/exhuast and polish both.

basically you do it with a dremel if you dont own a machine shop or take ur head to one. you remove all the castings like they said and you want to leave the intake a little ruff, because of well its complicated trust me. By ruff i mean like if u hit it with some 80 grit. after you smoothed it out and the exhaust side the smoother it is the better. Inside the head is a little tuff if you dont know what your doing. All i would do in there is use some old valves and polish the inside up with some 80 grit or 120 grit and leave the valve seatings alone an such unless u want to get really technical and crap. First it would be best to use a grinding stone they make all kinds of shapes i think the cone works best for getting into the edge of the intake and exhaust and when u use the 80 grit or 120 im talking about dont use a sander sander use a flap wheel with a drill or dremel. make sure u tape off with some duck tape what u dont want to sand or grind so u dont make a mistake that could be costly.

Polishing is fine...but to try to Port is a bad idea, Pin...smooth airflow isn't always the key. You want to leave it to somebody who knows what parts to take off and what to leave.

It would seem that the larger the port, the better it is, but it's not true.

I'm just polishing my H22 head. I can tell it's a hard work. I focus on carbon buildup removal in combustion chambers and exhaust ports. Later they will be mirror polished with 1200 grit. The worst my dremel tool went bad yesterday and I have 7 valve ports left.

Something I noticed when polishing my exhaust ports on an old
D16 engine, I got all the carbon off and smoothed the castings put the manifold on and started the car, everythign was good. I removed the manifold 20mins later and all the shiny stuff had gone

Basically dont go overboard on the show and shine factor, no one sees it plus that first time you turn your engine over it all dissapears.

yes, I'm aware of it. But a smooth surface is less prone to the carbon buildup. And the second reason- this head needs a little refreshing after 250k km.
