theres the cheap way and the right way.
right way would be convert to obdI
a cheap way would be to do the memory wire mod. it is the power constant that goes to the memory on the ecu, you cut it and wire it to a switch. you keep the switch on off so that it forgets that the timing is changed everytime you turn the car off. the reason for the switch is in case you get a cel, you flip the switch on so you dont lose the code.
im sure sombody can elebroate on this more, but thats all i can remember.
btw-how did you turn the distributor? did you use an older model one, or did you just take the botom bolt out?

you turn the distributer towards the firewall to advance it, correct?
So it's not correcting for you, it's just dong nothing. To adjust the timing you need to reprogram your ECU, even if you do an OBDI swap the CYP sensor is in the crank so you're still up a creek.

I understand the delima the 5th gen's are having, but with the 4th gen vtec, or perhaps all obd1 honda's, turning the dist. towards the firewall is advancing it, correct?

That still won't allow to adjust your timing though. It will cancel out the long term fuel trim data, that's about it I would think

Doing the OBD-II work around will not allow you to adjust your timing. Like said, the CYP sensor is on the block now and not in the distributor.
Maybe convert to OBD-1 and run a OBD-1 dist and wire up the CYP sensor to up there at the dist. Or just get a MSD igntion and timing control.
