if you use the redkey in the ignition your regular key(s) will be ineffective.

do NOT use the red key in the ignition, unless you LIKE bending over for the dealer.

well thats awsome news, so honda gives you a red key just to **** with you. its like "oh hey you lost your key, lets give you one and make you think its a spare so your fucked when you use it" Not to mention the color red which is found on firehydrents, fire alarms etc mean to use in case of emergency, so now this is an emergency, and if i use it, it will make things worse..makes sense.

thanks honda.

the AAA credit card thing will more than likely brake and it says not to use it...so basically im going to hitch hike my way to school.

yep. it immobilizes your engine to the other regular keys.
i guess if you lose your keys, and afraid someone might be able to jack your car, then use it.

then only the red key will work. if i am correct.

When I bought my 98 it came with 4 keys. Two black keys, one valet (gray) and the red key. I think the red key is used to program new keys purchased from Honda.

what's the AAA credit card thing you're refering to? If it's a way to try to get the car to start without the key, it won't work either since the immob will know a key isn't in the ignition and shut the car down.

its when they take your key and copy it into this plastic key that fits into your wallet. hence credit car wont work i think

just have your friend bring you the black key. Then, call up the dealer and ask them for the spare key and the valet key.

I did that and they also gave me all the manuals that they had forgotten and an extra clicker.

when I bought my 98, they told me the same thing. and if I use the red key, it will cost about $200 for a new set of keys and getting the computer reprogrammed.

If you read the package the red key came in..... it is to program any SPARE keys you get cut in the future. On the package in BIG BOLD LETTERS it tells you not to use it as a regular key..... otherwise your car will be dead and the dealer will have to reprogram your car.

Let's hold on here.

5th gen keys have a chip in them which activates the immobilizer, right? I was under the impression that you couldn't just go to the hardware store to get new keys made because of this. Anyone have any insight on this?

i know how to get around the imbolizer, but it would still require a key with a chip in it.
