Default Prelude specific Drag Racing wheel/tire combo.....

Mods i know this is wheel/tire related but after doing some searching all the info im finding out is for tiny 15" or 14" rims with 205 tires. There is just not enough Prelude people out there sharing drag strip wheel/tire set-ups, but if you guys feel this thread still doesnt belong here you can move it, i was just hopping to get Prelude related info.

Anyways here is the deal, im currently in the market for a better wheel/tire combo just for drag racing purposes. I have decided on a 16"x7 with a 225/50/16 tire or a 215 if a 225 wont fit. After doing some searches i have found out the most favorite tire options are the Falken Azenis, BFG T/A Drag Radials and the Kumho V710. Well here are my problems:

1. I cant find the BFGs Drag Radials in the 16" size im looking for, hell i dont think they even make a 16" tire of this style.

2. The Kumho has a 225/50ZR/16 tire but i have read they have a stiffer side wall compared to the BFGs, plus they are $166 a piece!

3. The Azenis are now the Rt-615 but they seem to be directed more towards autoX since they have stiff side walls.

I would love to put a set of BFGs Drag Radials on 16x7" Rota Slipstreams for the strip but i cant find the size i want. I have noticed the sizes are available for 17" rims but i would like to keep the 16" stock size.

What are some of the better tires out there you guys run at the drag strip with what size rim? Im staying away from full M/T slicks because im still running OEM driveshafts and i dont want to get towed home.

Well, you could try 15" wheels.

I would have to see if those would even clear the caliper? I would like to stay with a 16" wheel though. Ive read a 245 size tire would fit a 16x7" rim and Nitto makes a 245/50/16 NT 555r Drag Radial tire in that size. Would that size tire fit in a prelude?

A 15" wheel can clear the caliper.

245/50R16 is WAY bigger than stock. Beyond murdering your gearing, I can't imagine it fitting under the fender easily, and who knows how well it would even fit in the wheel well.

I wouldn't use 225/50 if I could avoid it, much less 245/50.

surprisingly stock shafts on preludes can take a beating. I want to run my car in the springtime at the track with drag radials.
last year there was a 500whp prelude with stock tranny and shafts running m/t slicks and he ran all day no issues
btw: with suspension and traction bars plus the drag radials you guys think i can hit 12.9?

looks like they only have 1 16" option, the drag radial II's

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/bfg/bfg.jsp

but these look pretty good too and they have a couple different profiles for a 16"

are u kidding? im at 444whp in a 5th gen as well and gunna be running on radials, looking to hit high 11's

-stock tranny/axles/head/intake manifold/cams/cam gears/NO TRACTION BAR

anyways e-money is suggesting running radials at 195/50/15 GTFO

225/50/15

so 225/50R/15 BFG Drag Radials and what size rim? 15x7 sound good? Im interested in the Rota Slipstreams cause they are cheap and weight about 12lbs, which is not bad.

Ive also been reading up on the drag racing forum and it seems alot of the eg/ek hatch guys run a 225/50/15 BFG. Wouldnt a slightly bigger tire be better for a prelude seeing how its heavier and it has a bigger wheel well?

Are you trying to stay DOT for a reason?

Why don't you get some welds and a set of M&H slicks?

Well i was staying away from slicks because i thought i could damage or break the oem axels but it was stated that the axels can handle plenty of power, another reason to stay DOT would be because i would be able to thow on the drag tires in the front and drive to the track since most of the time i go by myself i would not have to carry my rims in my car.

If I was gonna spend the money on a separate set of wheels for drag racing, I'd get slicks, they way outperform drag radials, and thats what matters on the timeslip.

Just my .02

Use 225 50 15 bfg's if you want to stay DOT. End of story.

Agreed If you want to go for your absolute best times you can get out of the car put on slicks on a 15x8 inch wheel and have a ball. If you can drive the car you WONT break axles. I am still on stock axles in both of my preludes and I don't plan on upgrading until they start to have a problem on a regular basis.

Thanks for all the info guys. But what would be a good wheel width to match the BFGs? 15x7? 15x8?

15x8 would defiantly be better because its a wider wheel so you have more contact on the road/track

I'm running Welds Draglite Wheels 15x8 on M&H Slicks (23x8.5x15).With these wheels I had to order Weld's Lug Nuts because standard open end lug nuts won't work. I also had to run ARP extended wheel studs and (2) 5/16'' wheel spacers on each wheel. Hope that helps
