poor mileage/very rough idle when warm
I have an antique Prelude (83) with dual carbs. It is running very rough at low RPM's and idle. Going down the road it sputters a bit if you drop off the foot feed a bit, but runs great when you step down on it (plenty of power). The fuel mileage has dropped from around 30 to around 20. I think it is a fuel problem but not sure. Did replace the rotor and cap however. It seems to idle better when it is cold. I pulled the air cleaner off and the choke(s) is open, but it almost acts like it is being flooded with a closed choke. Any ideas or should I just shoot the old girl and put her out of her misery? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Could be possibly be the valve thermowax sensor no. 12 in the picture :

This sensor I believe gives the engine a richer mix of fuel while cold until it gets warmed, then switches to a leaner mix fuel that is right for the engines temperature. This could be why your using too much fuel if it's giving a rich mix all the time. Or not giving a rich mix when cold causing the rough running you describe.

I will look into it. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate your thoughts. I did speak with a Honda mechanic over my Christmas break. He mentioned something about a diaphram or diaphrams "under" the carburators. He said you had to pull the carbs in order to replace them. He said those duel carbs were a real pain to remove. Not sure when I will find the time to look into things, but if I find an open weekend I may attempt to pull the carbs and see whats under there or look into the sensor you mentioned. Scott

Well, not too many old carbs out there anymore. If I can find a few spare hours I may tear into it and see what I can find. Nothing to lose at this point. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks.

I agree with InvaderTrax, you should definitely look into rebuilding the carb. I had an 83 civic wagon that was a real pain to start, rebuilding the carb fixed it.
Edit: Carbs, in your case.
