Just do it yourself and save the $300 for another mod or a rainy day. http://www.ntpog.org has a good write up on how to do it, shouldnt take more than a day or perhaps a weekend if you havent replaced shocks and springs before.

i have basically no mechanical know-how plus there's nobody i know of that can lend/rent me the proper tools to do the job itself. plus...i'd feel a lot more comfortable knowing that a professional did the job. if i did have the tools and a knowledgable friend, then i would definitely do it myself
can anybody recommend a good mechanic/shop that can install just shocks? i'm looking into around $120-150.

you will not get an accurate answer on a nationwide forum. the labor rates differ in each area. call around to some other shops in your area and check they're labor rates. do not however tell them the price you were quoted at, they can either raise they're price or lowball and cut corners when doing the job.

Re-do your profile to show at least what region you're in, then see if any H-T members live near you. If so, see if any of them have some knowledge in that area (which is very likely) and ask them to help/show you how to install them. That way you can get it done and learn how to do-it-yourself at the same time. As far as the cost is concerned, with members I've seen a 12-pack and a few bucks go a long way.
If that's not feasible, ask around for someone at any shop who does work "on the side" (as in at their crib). Instead of using a lift, jackstands may suffice, and the "at home" price is usually less than half the "at the shop" price...

well, you have to take the whole thing out anyway so i don't see why the price would be any different...besides more $$$ for the shop.
edit: i think if i take my time and go slow, it'll take me about 3 hours to do a whole car, that includes breaks to go to the fridge to get another

$300 If you not comfortable of installing yourself, I encourage you to call around. I had my suspension install for $140 which included the alignment.
