H series with F20C RWD Tranny?
I haven't been on Honda-Tech in a while...I've sold my Del Sol and bought a Fit, but I have another project car that's just begging for some kind of conversion.
It's a 1977 Datsun 280Z.
I've seen an F20C been done, but I'm not sure I want to do that, simply because the torque doesn't peak until 7500 RPM's. I was thinking more along the lines of an H23A or F20B, because from what I've seen and heard, the H-series and the DOHC F-series seem to have more torque down in the bottom end than other Honda engines. But the problem is, the Z is rear wheel drive and I hope to keep it that way. I know that other F-series transmissions and H series transmissions will interchange between the F and H engines, but will the RWD 6-speed from a S2000 bolt up to any other F and H series engine in the same way? I know the F20C and F22C is an oddball to the other F-series engines, so I wanted to see...
Also, would the rotation be the same? I'd hate to have 5 reverse gears and 1 forward gear, lol.

Looking back though...I think I'll just stick with the L28. It seems like he must have taken the Differential and flipped the ring gear on the opposite side so it would rotate counter clockwise, so you cause the wheels to rotate in the reverse direction, and plus the H22A is mounted like a front wheel drive, and the nose of the 280Z would be so long and it would be hard to properly mount it. Plus, I got to look over an H22A today (Never really messed with them, but had to rebuild one for an Automotive technology class), and I really hate that tensioner assembly. It was such a pain to put back.

just so you're aware, there is now a kit available for the F20C that adds i-VTEC (like the K-series' have) which significantly improved low to mid-range torque. there was an article about it in Honda Tuning Magazine last October.

with that 240sx, anyone notice how it looks like the back half of the h22 trans was just unbolted and s2000 tranny mated right up? I have been wanting to try this, but am just more curious on how to get the motor and tranny to spin in the right direction. could always learn how to drive fast in reverse...but then I would still have a fwd civic
