Re: do you really need timing belt cover? (GraphiteMW)
You don't *really* need it... I mean... you could even say it's better without it right? Weight savings... better ventilation...
However... lets consider some possible reasons why Honda put covers...
1. Say your belt snaps... it will rip your engine bay apart...
2. Protection against any road debris... like a small rock makes its way up into the belt/cams... it can easily cause #1.
I'm sure there are more reasons...
IMO... keep the cover on

main reason is like he said to protect them from dirt and debris. many people roll without them just a added security feature for those who want it.

I keep mine on even on my track lude there there is 1 less thing for me to worrie about. I have seen a motor pick up a rock during a burn out @ the track and the motor skipped 3 teeth no engine damage but he got lucky could have been worse.

doesnt matter if you havent had any issues, its just a dumb thing to do IMO, why risk your engine over showing off your gears? get a clear cover or have one made up

I do keep the covers but have holes cut out for just the cam gears. So they are easy to get to to make adjustments as needed. Taking off the vavle cover every time u need to make an adjustment is a waste of time and a extra pain in the *** IMO. There is a right/functional way to do this

How often do you adjust them? I set mine on the dyno and have not adjusted them since. (and I didn't have to take the valve cover off...)

I have to agree with this, I don't really see how the potential risk could possibly be worth it.
Although if I try this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1735759 I may cut a small section out of mine!

I adjust them as nesscarry more then most people. Also you adjusted them on the dyno and didnt remove the valve cover and you must not have holes cut in valve cover or top timing cover them either I suppose.
Dont just quote that part quote the whole post I made. The sentence before that justifies why I said that I feel that way.

Meh, if you want the hawt look of being able to see the cam gears you can:
1) roll with it off all the time AND
a) maybe never have trouble and insist its not needed
b) catch debris in the belt and do some damage to your timing belt and hear 10k "told you so's"
2) Take it off only at shows, for the look and the safety
3) Leave it on and cut out a circle or use a plexi window, looks and safety
4) Just leave it on all together and not worry about catching debris
