I was looking into getting a set of stock H23 rods worked at a local machine shop and the guy told me he didn't recommend cryo-treating or shot peening. He told me that w/ my rods, cryo-treating would simply relieve any stress areas in the rod, but if it was going to snap, then it would still snap. So he says that's a waste of money...
He also told me that shot-peening is "antique" and it's an "old hotrodder's trick", and that it was a waste of money. What?! The guy that's gonna help me w/ my motor is a Nissan guru and he swears by cryo-treating the whole block....who's right here?

In some of my earliest race motors I ran stock rods (too poor for good rods then)with ARP rod bolts that had been cryoed and shotpeened...they are still alive after 7 years - that has to count for something. I also shotpeen my gears in the tranny and my crankshafts - never had a failure since I started doing that either.

Yea my friend just sent his gears off in his car (went turbo 3rd gear didnt like it at all) So hopefully well see good results from it heck 40bucks not bad for all 5 gears

Dang, where'd he get that deal? The only shop i've checked w/ around here for cryo'n is 150 for pistons and rods. I gotta see if i can somewhere better...

Honestly not sure he only did his gears sounds like your doin a lot more. I can check with him and get back to you.

would anyone be so kind as to give a quick description as to what shot peening and cryotreating is? i'm guessing that cryotreating would be deep freezing the block to a certain temp for a prolonged period of time?

Yep, that's the jist of cryo treating, and shot peening is shooting the metal hard w/ a bunch of little BB like things
