crack position sensor- distributor help
Question for you guys. I have a 96 accord with a 98 jdm h22a. I have been running the stock h22a distributor (internal coil) but it has given out and so I need a new one. I have been looking online at places like distributor king for a replacement.
The USDM 98 prelude distributor is external coil so I would have to convert. Im looking at pictures of the USDM distributor and I see 2 connectors. Im assuming one goes to the harness and one goes to the coil. What about the crank position sensor on USDM 98 preludes? On my h22a the crank position sensor is in the distributor so I routed those wires to the crank sensor plug on the main harness which was by the crank since I was using the accord main harness.
If I buy this distributor how do I hook up the crank position sensor and external coil?
Thanks for the help. Should I use a different distributor?

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
hmmmmmm id rather not do that. Are there any other distributors that I could use or do I have to get a JDM h22a distributor?

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
So the 92-95 USDM preludes have a crank sensor inside the distributor and the 97-01 USDM have them on the block? I wouldnt mind going to a US distributor since its easier to find the parts locally as long as the crank sensor is inside the distributor. Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
One last question. Sorry to sound stupid but I havent had an external coil distributor.
I'm wondering how you would hook this all up. On my internal coil 98 jdm distributor there were about 10 or so wires sticking out. Half of them went to the distibutor plug on the main harness and the other half or so went to the crank sensor plug.
I'm looking at pictures of the 92-95 obd1 distributor plug now and there are already 2 plugs. I'm assuming one goes to the external coil and the other goes to the distributor plug on the main harness. How is the crank sensor hooked up?

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
To be precise there are 3 "crank" sensors, TDC, CKP, CYP. The US OBD1 and JDM dizzys have all 3 in them, the US OBD2 ones only have CYP in them.
The coil plug for the external coil distributors is on the cap itself, it's just like the spark plug wires.
I haven't messed around with the wires on a US OBD1 dizzy, so I can't really say, sorry.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
I found that from another site. Mine is a 98 JDM with internal coil and not the type S model. What distributor is it ? I cant look at mine cause im in NY and my car is in CO. I wanted to buy the distributor now cause ill be going back to CO soon and want it to be there when I get there since I dont have much time.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
It seems as though the USDM OBD1 h22a distributor is what I want since it has all 3 sensors inside the distributor. I would just have to figure out the wiring of those sensors and re-route 2 of them down to the oil pump area where it goes into the accord harness and I would have to convert to an external coil.
Is there anything else involved in going from OBD2 to OBD1? Anything to do with the ecu? Currently its an OBD2 ecu

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
Only thing US is the 96 accord engine harness. Everything else is JDM including the ECU.
Will there be problems using the OBD1 distributor on my OBD2 engine/ecu?

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
I don't see any issues stemming from it. The JDM ECU was set up for CKP/CYP/TDC to be in the distributor and they'll be there.
You'll just need to rig up the ignition coil.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
Haha yeah I didnt even notice til like an hour after I posted.
My plan is this. Since my OBD2 h22 (internal coil) has all 3 sensors in the distributor, I'm going to use the OBD1 USDM h22 distributor (external coil) cause it has all 3 in the distributor as well then just convert from internal to external coil.
I'm going to just find out which 4 wires go to the CKP and TDC sensors and connect that to the accord harness near the oil pump since on the accord those sensors werent in the distributor.
One final question. My OBD2 JDM distributor had 9 wires. 4 went to the CKP and TDC sensors and went to the accord harness at the oil pump. The other 5 wires (2 for the CYP sensor) went to the distributor plug into the main harness. On the OBD1 USDM distributor how many wires are there? When I look at pictures I see a 2 pin and 8 pin connector. The 2 pin goes to the coil but what about the 8 pin? 4 would go to the CKP and TDC sensors then of the remaining 4, 2 go to the CYP sensor then what are the other 2? The OBD2 JDM had 3 wires.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
I emailed distributor king and they suggest the TD-89 distributor (internal coil). Based on that table above the TD-89 came from the Type S. Is there any difference between the Type S and base OBD2 h22?

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
I would be surprised if there are any differences in the JDM Prelude distributors, especially in the 5g (OBD2) area. The JDM Accord, at least from what I've seen, is a little different.

Re: crack position sensor- distributor help
I saw this on a post yesterday for 92-95 prelude OBD1 h22a
CKP blue/green Signal
blue/yellow ground
TDC orange/blue signal
white/blue ground
CYP orange signal
white ground
I can't verify this though as my son's car is in tennessee and I'm in wisconsin.
