that's weird, maybe cause they hadn't come out with the 90-91 models yet? but even those had B21's which is still a B-series motor. So those trannys work.

If its a 5 speed then the 90/91 tranny will work in the 89, you just need to change out the clutch disc to one from the 90/91 and possibly the intermediate shaft. Also you need to keep the speed sensor from the 89 tranny, it went to an electronic sensor in 90. Some of the 90/91s had better gearing than the 88/89. Keep in mind if you want to get a clutch kit, the pressure plate also changed from 89 to 90, you need to change the flywheel to use a 90 pressure plate. I'd save some money and just buy the clutch disc for a 90 if your pressure plate is good.
The only trannys that will work will be from the 88-91 preludes. No other tranny will fit. These are the bastard b series, there is almost nothing interchangeable between them and the civic/integra b series. The preludes are cable shift trannys and are designed to sit at more of an angle to match the engine.

You have to have the corresponding flywheel/clutch combo.
88-89 trans = 88-89 Clutch and Flywheel (Has Mechanical VSS)
90-91 trans = 90-91 Clutch and Flywheel (Has Electronic VSS)
That is why they are not listed as a direct swap.

What Cory said here.
And please do not confuse the B20a5/B21a1 series motors with anything civic/integra/CRV related because they are not at all.
88-91 Preludes have unique parts. There are some parts that can be made to fit, but very little and you better do your research before buying anything for the 3rd gen Prelude.
And to the OP, please go to www.p r e l u d e p r e l u d e p o w e r.com(no spaces) and register there for complete aftermarket and OEM support for the 3rd gens, because you will not get accurate information for our chassis on honda-tech.
Its the biggest and highly trafficed forum for 3rd gens on the planet, and thats not an exaggeration, see you there.

Your best bet will be to hit up prelude power forum in the for sale section to purchase from a member there or hit up the junkyards and try your luck.
