Car dies while driving
H23VTEC Prelude
Got a problem with the lude.....
well first off...while taking a potential buyer on a test drive the cat blew out all the honey comb stuff. The stuff looked RED HOT and the cat's honey comb stuff was flying out of the exahust system. Replaced the cat with a high flow cat. When I looked at the faulty cat it looked hollowed out (Random Tech cat).
Back to the story, buyer down shifted and the car wouldnt go...it sounded like a lot of air passing through the exhaust. The car just suddenly died while in gear, no bog, CEL, or anything.
Parked the car on the freeway shoulder and tried to start it up. When going to crank it up, sounds like you're doing a compression test with the distributor unplugged. So parked the car on the shoulder of the freeway for 20minutes to let the car cool off because the cat was glowing red/orange. Restarted the car and it starts up fine, drives perfect, hit VTEC and pulls very hard as usual, drove it for 1 mile then the car dies again, only lights that comes on is the battery and seat belt lights.
Tried to start it up again, it wont start, sounds like a compression test again. Let it sit for 2 minutes, started up fine and drives normal again. It does this a couple of times until the buyer and I got to my apartment.
Buyer was like this thing pulls damn hard, change out the cat and i'll come and take a look at it again Tuesday.
Any ideas what could cause the car to keep dieing while driving. Then letting it sit for 1 minute then it can start again?
Would it be the ignitor or external coil? Again NO CELL. No symptons before it dies...drives fine then all of a sudden it dies and you cant crank it up for another 1-2 minutes.

It could be the igniter but I kinda doubt it because no cel and no warning..
Sounds like something with the fuel system to me. If your cat is glowing visibly from the outside I would say you must be running super rich....

Re: Car dies while driving (Sam1am26)
yes stock P13, i did have a "Fuel system malfunction" 3 weeks before this happened. I replaced the o2 and fuel filter and it never came back.
idle seems fine. So you think the stock H22 (345cc) injectors are too much for the stock compression of the H23VTEC?

I had a problem with mine shuting off like that (minus the cat problems and wierd sounds) and it was the ignition switch... Got that replaced under the recall

Re: Car dies while driving (M.J.M.)
problem FIXED!!!!!
first thing i did was replaced the ignitor (from an extra H22 diistributor i had). Let the car warm up all the way until fan came on and drove it for like 30minutes and it didnt die woohooo. There was another problem, drove normal until i hit like 4500-5000rpm and the rpm tach would jump all around whipping back and forth.
Got home and took the good ignitor out again and replaced the whole distributor with my spare H22 distributor and runs perfect now. Just needs to advance timing a little bit because i think timing is a little retarded (didnt have a timing gun). Reason I know is because lowend isnt as strong as before but VTEC, BOY IT PULLS AND IT SCREAMS...imagine if i was to put higher compression pistons instead of leaving the stock h23 pistons in...any woo
Thanks for all your help guys

I know how you feel... I left the H23 pistons in mine and have a C/R of 9.3:1 because I am going turbo, and it still pulls hard... I can't even imagine if I had some Type S pistons... This would be a badass N/A motor with high compression...
