Brand New Prelude, any helpful hints?
I just bought a 2001 Prelude, brand new w/ only 100 miles on it. (The miles are from transporting it) Now I've heard that you're not suppose to use the VTEC for the first 1,000 miles, which makes sense to me, but when does the VTEC kick in, 5,000-5,500 RPMs? Another thing the dealer told me was that I should NOT change the oil for the first 7,500 miles becuase they add a certain "break-in ingredient" or something that should stay in the engine that long. I've always thought you're suppose to change it after the first 1,000 miles, but then again I've never owned a Honda. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if you guys have any tips or ideas I should follow to make my car run at its best down the road. Thanks

I'm not particularly sure when the VTEC kicks in, but to play it safe...I wouldn't go past 4500 rpm for at least the first 1000 miles.
Read the Owner's Manual on specific break-in recommendations. The Prelude's might be different because of the Nikasil cylinder liners that they use (vs. the cast iron ones in the Integra, for example).
Vary the rpm load during the break-in period and never lug the engine.
About the oil: I think that 7500 miles is a bit long for one oil change interval. At any rate, check the oil level every week for signs of being low and darkness of color. If it's getting close to the lower dot on the dipstick, ask the dealership about getting it replenished (b/c I sure as hell don't know what to use). If the color is tending too much towards black, then go ahead and get an oil change.

VTEC kicks in at 5200 RPM
The dealership told us the same thing about the break in period. I am planning on changing it this weekend with about 4K on the motor. I am not comfortable going to 7.5K miles on original oil.
Let me know if you find out something important. Enjoy your new lude
BTW what color did you get

Check the oil very often. Preludes seem to eat a lot of oil during break-in. Check the owner's manual for the recommended break-in procedure.
