Anyone use 87 Octane (Regular) in there 5th Gen Prelude?? Opinion's?
Since gas is getting so high, I began to wonder about using regular instead of supreme gasoline. When i had my turbocharged 99 Si, I would alway's put supreme (93 octane), unless I went to the track and turned up the boost then I would run C16 (117 Octane). But in my Prelude I rarely go over 4500rpm, seriously. I'm just not into stressing out the motor anymore. So the way i look at it, there shouldn't be any difference in the way the car run's if i drive it the way I normally do on 87 Octane. If you think about it, DOHC Vtec motor's require Supreme gasonline due to there high reving and aggressive ignition parameters. So I don't think there would be a problem in running Regular gas...once in a while atleast. I also thought about what it would do to my injectors as far as build up and so forth.
What do you guy's think?
Thank's!

if you use 87 octane in a 5th gen, it will start making noises such as knocking from the engine...poor performance overall ..etc...

Re: Anyone use 87 Octane (Inextricabledrvr)
ecu detunes your engine and it'll sound like its dying, poor performance. knocking...
our motors require the highest octane at the pump because we have a high c/r. without it, there might be pre-detonation (knocking)
rpm has no relation with octane rating necessities.

Yeah I know that, but I never really go over 4500 rpm at all. I remenber once when I put 5 dollars of regular when I meant to put supreme in my turbocharged civic. I really noticed of difference when I would accelerate to 5000 rpm and shift. But this is just a stock Prelude, which has not seen Vtec in a long time!

dont go below 91 octane unless your want to be blowin smoke and messin up the motor. if you are worried about the price of gas and never get on it get a hybrid civic or somthing.

Your right, but my budget might not be the same as others. I get around 325-350 miles to the tank. I have gotten as much as 394 miles once. But I drive alot and decided to throw this qustion in the air and see what everyone think's!

I used to use 93 at every fill-up. Gas prices got high and I don't pay for my gas so when my funder found out I was using 93, I had to stop. Switching over to 87 octane, I haven't noticed any engine problems or knocking as I'm seeing in the previous threads. I run a tank of premium every month but I see no difference in engine activity. I could be running half a second slower but it saves money and I'm not at the track anyways. Still using 87 octane, damn those prices are getting high. Anyone let me know if they have actual evidence, not just rumors that the engine is knocking cuz I haven't had 1 problem and I've been using 87 for about 5 months.

if you keep using it your motor will start to have many problems. switch to 91 or higher. the price you are saving for gas wont be nearly as much as the price it will cost when something goes wrong. 91 or higher, there's a reason it says too.

dont take no offense to this as I tell this to everyone who asks this question
Reading comprehension much?
If the manual says to use 91octane, you use 91octane(or higher)
no ifs, ands, or buts,

You should be fine with 87 octane and daily driving. Just don't go into VTEC and you should be safe. The knock sensor will retard timing to keep it safe for you. Just don't floor it going up hills and stuff like that you'll be ok. I mean a B18B1 Integra LS motor has 9.3:1 compression I believe and it runs on 87 perfectly. We're only .7 points higher than that. It's not THAT big a difference. Just try to go easy on the gas and don't hit VTEC.

use the fuel it was designed to run on!
by running 87 you will most likely loose gas milage so it will all even out. my dad accidentally put 87 in my 92 si and I only got about 15 mpg, as compared to about 22 with 91.

Re: (fireslinge)
I've been using 89 octane for some time now with no problems. If a 11.1 type S motor can use 91 no problem I see no reason why a 10.1 motor can't use 89.

Re: (curtisfong)
Next time I fill up, i'm going to try 87 octane. I feel as thoght if i'm not running it into Vtec then i'll be fine. Like I said earlier about using higher octane to run higher boost, is pretty much the same concept as using 97 ocatne to run Vtec!

ive asked that question b4 for my 4th gen non vtec and i asked them the same but that was a different forum and they said for mine its ok to use 87. What do ya think? the person b4 me who had it allwasy used 93 octane but i allways use 97 cause 93 is insanely pricey.
Would it b better for me as well to use 93? or 91, even tho i heard that theres realy no difference between 87 and 91.

I cant believe you would save a few cents and sacrifice performance and the safety of your engine like that. If you dont want to spend the extra $2 or whatever per tank, then sell it and get a CX civic.
Put the proper fuel in your car.

i second that... theres no need to be "cheap" about it. i only use 93 octane, and when 94 octane is on sale, i go for that. if you wanted fuel efficiency get the hybrid
and 89 octane is for honda lawnmower engines
