1994 honda prelude vtec. Jdm h22 unknow milage on engine previous owner swap. New exhaust and tekiko shocks with skunk2 lowering springs. Stage 2 exedy with findanza 8lb.

I have a problem where when I rev the engine in neutral I hear no rattling or tapping. However, when between 2 and 3k rpms any gear if I rev too quickly(straight or turning) I can feel a hard rattling or knocking in the pedals along with hearing it. As well when I hit vtech in 5th I hear a tapping noise, not like a rod knock or piston slap just a loud tap like there is compression loss. This is my first vtech so I don't know how its supposed to sound but if I hit ~5500 rpms in any gear it picks up smooth and purrs and I was told that's what vtech was.I don't burn oil no matter how fast I'm driving. I have an alldata oem setup not helms and can't find anything to meet what's up. So I am posting to see if anyone else has ever experienced these problems. I have popped the hood and messed with the ?throttle? Reving the engine while having it in neutral and heard no tapping or knocking or squealing.

sounds like some kind of transmission problem, does it sound like it comes from there? also could be that your valves need to be adjusted, but if only happens in gear does not make sense.

I see. I'm thinking the previous owner may not have broke in the clutch. He said the clutch only had ~2k miles on it. He put it in when he did the engine swap.

agree...maybe the clutch was broken into correctly

Inproperly breaking in the clutch will not cause it to make noises, it'll cause the clutch disc not to last as long as it should. And, clutch don't make noises unless there some loose flywheel or pressure plate bolts. A throw out bearing and input & output shaft bearings are the only thing I can think of that makes the noises if they're worn out.

I have the same issues as you, down to the T. I brought it to my mechanic saying my clutch is acting weird. next day he told me it was the intake manifold and had a vacuum leak. he said my clutch is fine, but the intake was causing a mis-shift. I trust him so whatever. I just got it back yesterday, and the knock is still there, and he didn't really fix anything. So I'm still gonna go ahead and say its a clutch issue

Just a random thought. Have you checked the valve lash? I am not really familiar with Honda engines as I am new to the Honda world. But usually when I had that issue it was when the valve and cam spacing wasnt correct and the cam would hit the top of the valve instead of ride against it. Just a thought.
