My new project bike - '87 FZ600!
Looks like I'll have something to tinker with while I heal up over the next few months after surgery. It's a 1987 Yamaha FZ600 (think 80's R6) and needs a whole lot of TLC, but should be up and running with about $500 in parts and a bunch of work. If it works out, I might race the thing in the Nostalgia class at Willow Springs at the end of this year. Just under 60hp, top speed around 125mph, and weighs nearly 450lbs
A good friend of mine gave it to me after watching it sit under a tarp for 2 years being unridden. He's owned it since 1988 and gave it to me in hopes that it would be used on the track.
Anyone ridden one of these?

Flippin' sweet!! I had an '86 FZ600 for my first bike. Mine was aesthetically challenged - the owner before me had a Mugen sticker (yeah, rice-bike) and PINK handlegrips. We almost went with pink streamers, but I figured at least the grips are covered when I'm riding.
That bike looks to be in good shape cosmetically. The engines are pretty reliable, but I'm sure with two years of sitting, there is a lot to be worked on.

Man that thing brings back memories - I was a super squid back then too. Helmet only, rarely any other gear. Occasionally some deerskin gloves (eh!??) and a GAP leather jacket (wtf). Oh, and my Adidas tennis shoes too for style. Shorts, of course.
But damn if I didn't ride EVERYwhere.

Re: My new project bike - '87 FZ600!
Thanks, guys. It's in fairly good shape aside from a family of deer mice that lived under the seat for a winter last year. It's going to need a good carb cleaning, new rubber, new brakes (lines, fluid, master cylinder, pads), and some new fork seals. Aside from that it will be ready to rock for summer.
I've looked into modifications for it and found out that the FZR400/600 17" wheels can be fitted (can use BT 090 Race tires) and it should be capable of respectable times at Willow. I'm stoked.

heard alot of people grab the fzr400 frames because they weigh less or something and grab a 600 donor bike like yours and swap everything over. when they race them
these guys have the repair manual in PDF format for download, alot of them get the yzf600 tanks, update the look of them. few racers on there IIRC
