Just got my service manual for my bike and noticed something odd..
I just got a kawasaki service manual for my 636 and according to manual it says the first oil change should be at 1000 miles.. then 7500 miles then 15000 miles, then 24000 miles! If this was the case then you'd be doing like one oil change a year and it even says which ever comes first.. once a year or every 7000 miles or so. Same goes for the oil filter. Now I do my oil changes every 2000 miles.. so who's right? I've never heard of waiting that many miles before an oil change..

thats cool. change it as often as you feel comfortable, as long as its less than whats in that book, you're ok.
what does the owners manual say?

The thing is I don't feel comfortable changing only ever 7500! But if that is all that is required then I say I might as well save the hassle of doing this every 2k miles..
The owners manual says same thing..

I think most car/bike manufacturers give those high numbers to lower the cost of maintenance. Would you buy a bike if it required an oil change every 500miles when a comparable bike only needs it every 7Kmiles?
It all does come down to what you feel like doing. I, personally, think every 2K miles is overkill. And then there are some people that think every 7K miles is perfectly fine.
I don't think the average consumer knows enough about oil lubricating technology to figure out what truely is best, so just play it safe, whatever that means to you.
I think the 3K/3month is advertising hype by the oil companies, but I still follow it cause I'm impressionable like that. haha

Those are odd intervals. I imagine Kawasaki would want to keep things regular. Never know what Kawasaki Heavy Industries and those who buy those motorcycles are thinking...
I go with 3500 / 7000 (oil change / oil & filter change). Shorter intervals when I hit the track.

then do it whenever you feel its appropriate. i think my bike calls for 4k intervals. thats what i do.
