Okay, now that you've read this, I will ask you this question:

What will be your purpose for this bike?

Learning? Stunting? Racing? Self-imaging?

Tell us what your reasons of why you want to ride, and we'll give you the best possible answer with the current knowledge that H-T's finest can provide.

Why? for a 600? It's done all the time. Not everyone has to start with a 250, etc. just because you think they do.

yes

they're cheaper and easier to learn on. and should you drop or wreck it and break something, its cheaper and easier to find as well.

agreed, i started on an FZ1 (de-tuned R1), now im waiting for an 07 R1. I work as a salesmen at a local motorcycle dealership, it breaks my heart seeing bikes leave knowing that they are gonna be going down with a week because of inexperience. i highly recommend the 250 or 500 route of learning. Whatever you decide, any of the new 600's are amazing

First off, why don't you try searching on "learner bikes", b/c this topic has been gone over about a zillion times.
Second, I too work at a motorcycle dealership and feel the same about people buying 600RR's and R1's as learner bikes....I seriously fear for their safety.
Top shelf 600s (600RR, R6) and liter bikes make bad first bikes because:
1. They are very expensive to fix if they get dropped or crashed, esp. compared to a naked bike
2. While its surely been done, they are too powerful for someone without experience at both reacting to panic situations and throttle control. They can power wheelie flip, unlike a smaller (500cc or less) bike that might just lift the front tire.
4. Their nimble race tuned handling at speed has the opposite effect at low speed....less stable and easier to drop in a parking lot or on slippery surfaces

Do yourself a favor and get something used and cheap and then you won't cry so badly when you drop it the first or second time.....oops....dont forget to put that kickstand down....heh....good luck though....ride safe.

Better get two different bikes for that.

get an F4 if you are hell bent on getting a supersport style 600 for your first bike. it will be cheaper to fix when you bail and they can be had for half the price of a RR.

i think the best 2 600cc machines out there to learn on are

1. the f4i, awesome all around bike, faster than most 600s (even its bigger brother the 600rr) in the 1/4 (close gearing), so you know it hangs with the rest, but its still comfortable and practical. not to mention the huge aftermarket support and used parts laying around everywhere.

2. an sv650, sweet looking naked bike (less fairings means less money after a crash) and not a massive 100+ hp motor that can get you in trouble easily, even though you still can get yourself in trouble. and since its a twin you have some nice torque for getting around town.

I started off learning on my Dad's Suzuki gs500e before getting my own Kawasaki Ninja 500r.

IMHO the Ninja 500 is one of the best beginer bikes, it has enough power so you're not constantly being left behing, but not so much you're a threat to everyone around you.

It handles well enough...but buy it used. After 2 years on the semi-eternal legend I had to jump up to my Ducati.

i think i'd make a killing selling cardboard cutouts of 600RRs and 1000RRs for people to pose next to in parking lots.

everybody wants one (including me sometimes)
