I have a 02 954RR and it started to warm up here so I decided to go for a ride. Well I charged my battery I road about 100 miles the other day. When I got home I parked my bile an about 10 minutes later I go out to put it in the garage and the battery was dead?!? I the battery is a year old about 2 weeks ago so I see no reason why the battery would be the issue, do you guys have any suggestions? I work on cars so I would think it's a alternator but I know bikes have something different that I've never dealt with. Thanks for the help guys.

Stator could be bad... but take a good look at your connectiosn and ground. it may simply be a bad connection. are you getting slow cranking or a click?

slow crank when the battery dies. I have been charging it but it seems to loose power. I will check all my connections when I get out of work today. But I'm pretty sure everything is good. The only thing I have done is change the plugs and oil since it sat over the winter.

When my VFR had it's Regulator/rectifier go bad, it would do this. Basically, you're running the electronics off the battery, and it won't recharge.

ok I have no idea what the ""VFR" or any of that it? Can you dumb it down a little for me. An how can I check to see if that's the problem?

VFR is a motorcycle... I would be willing to bet it is the stator. can you get it tested in your area?

I spent nearly a week trying to fix the charging problems on my cbr, turned out to be a burnt/broken/rotten/whateveryouwanttocallit cable from the stator to the RegRec. Pay close attention to wiring before spending money on other parts.

Indeed... you need to check parts condition prior to buying a new part... specially a stator which can be very expensive. I to have seen fried wiring in that area.

I have no clue if I can get it tested or not, would the honda dealer do it? I will check all the wiring tonight when I get out of work to see if is any of that before I worry about getting it tested. But let me know were you would be able to take it to for testing or if there is anything I can do to test it myself.

If you are not comfortable diagnosing issues like this, take it to a shop...

Thanks guys....I will check the stator and see if that is the issue, luckily I don't have to rip to much apart to get to it.

look for ANY fraying where a charge would get grounded out

Check the voltage regulator before you tear into your stator. The regulators going bad on hondas is a very common problem. If you don't have a DMM (digital multi meter), pick one up from radioshack for around $20.

This tutorial is for a different honda motorcycle, but it is essentially the same system on the 954. Perform these steps and it will determine which part in your charging system is faulty.

On the Aprilias it was always the stators...

Also, if you pull the stator cover off, make sure you have another gasket. It's about $10 from the dealer.

Thanks for all the help guys....looks like I have some work to do and shouldn't take no time to find out exactly what my problem is. Should be a little easier than what I expected.

That's what I'm hoping it is since it will be much cheaper. Plus from what you guys showed me it seems to make sure since that my stator is still working properly.
