Since I'm moving to CA for a while with Ashish (from Boston), I have to figure out how to get my bike over there safely with me. I'm looking for some intelligent opinions, as I basically have to decide what the heck I'm doing today, since we're leaving sunday.

The options we've been considering so far are (although none of them seem good):

1.) Tow the bike behind the Type-R

I don't want to hear that this is a bad idea blah blah, I <3 Type-R's, blah blah...this would consist of buying a hitch, buying a trailer and towing it. I could either buy a shitass trailer and keep it, or I was contemplating buying a nice trailer and reselling it in CA.

2.) Ship it, ship it good...

This is obviously safer, but expensive.

I don't like either option, because bringing it with us means more effort, worse gas mileage and more worry. However, spending $600 or so to ship it sucks as well. Riding it is NOT an option :-P Any other options we're missing, or even better, suggestions for shipping companies that are cheap, good, bad, etc.

about $500-$700 to ship a bike from that area to cali by a reputable shipper... the cheapest way I have experienced to get a bike cross country (other than riding it) is to rent a enclosed bed Uhaul truck or van... expense is one way and you can tow the type r behind that... I'm not really into hauling an exposed bike across country, hence the uhaul/penske/etc. what area are you moving to?

I vote for the trailer option, but get a good trailer................cuzz once you get out to CA your gonna want to do some trackdays anyway

No experience with shipping companies. The uhaul idea is another solution.

Rent a Uhaul and A) pack all your ****, as well as well as your bikes in it, and one of you drive the Type AHH, and one you drive the Uhaul. or B) Rent a Uhaul that you can tow a car with, pack all your ****, and your bikes in the Uhaul, hitch the car to the back, and both ride in the Uhaul.

I suppose I should've mentioned that we already considered that. Renting a truck would only be economically feasible (i.e. cheaper than shipping) If we were able to eliminate the fuel costs for our other vehicle (i.e. put it in the back of the truck). I've done this before, and the type R, my bike and our stuff would fit quite nicely in the 26' penske. When I took a 26' from TN to MA with a GVR-4 in the back, it cost $550 for the truck plus $200-$300 in fuel.

HOWEVER, penske and uhaul both suck nuts, and charge by demographic, not mileage. (Not that I'm at all suprised)
For a penske with a AAA discount, it would be $2650 just for the truck from boston to San Diego, not including fuel.

Personally, it's just an integra and I could care less about it. Hell, it was almost destroyed today by the BIGGEST ******* beaver running across a highway today that I have ever seen; thing would have destroyed the front end and deployed bags.

seems like youve already covered your bases. but the type r trailer sounds like the way to go. on the other hand something like forward air might make the trip a bit quicker.

i would try to calculate the total costs for both of those options, and just go with the cheaper one.

Towing is gonna drive you mad. 55mph the whole way is the suck. At least, it's 55 in Cali. And piggies aren't too happy when you're flying by at 85. (Don't ask...)

If you don't care about the tires too much, I would second the idea of riding/driving with switching off.

sell the snowblower in the garage picture and that should cover a portion of the shipping costs
