Default Rear Drum Brakes?!

I was just checking the specs on the Fit and it has drum brakes in the rear. This is probably to save weight but it's kind of a let down. I wonder how long it will take a company to offer the rear discs or if any other comapany like Spoon already have them available

Rear drums aren't such a bad thing.

They require adjustment and overheat sooner than disc brakes, but those are pretty much the only downsides. The Fit is a lightweight car and those who race lightweight EF's do not have any problems with rear drum setups.

Considering the vast majority of braking is done with the fronts, I think they'll be just fine on the Fit being it's not a sports car.

Where does the safe factor come in at?

Rear discs yield better heat dissipation, fade resistance, water-shedding ability; all of which will help stopping distances. Albeit it usually isn't much, it may prevent you from colliding with a vehicle in front of you. Isn't that a safety advantage?

Yes, maybe in a car that weighs 2 times as much. There is a reason you only have to chang your rear pads every 50k miles or more, and thats because at least 80% of the braking is done with the front end of the system. Honda gave us 6 airbags and stuck us with rear drums, go figure.

There isn't going to a saftey risk with rear drums. I'd rather have the drums and save money on the car. If I were using it as a bonafide racecar, that'd be one thing. But for daily driving, drums are just fine. As stated above, the front wheels do 80% of the braking anyway.

True It would be different if the car were heavier then rear discs would be a must for better stability during hard braking, but since the Fit is small and light it really wouldn't need them.

I am an owner of a jazz (1.4 cvt-7). The car has 4 airbags but it has ventilated disc brakes behind. It also has 15" 185/55 tires and heated electric (closes with a button) with turn signal door mirrors.
